4.0 out of 5 stars Liverpool Taffy, 13 Jun 2002
By Mrs. Elaine E. Ogbeta "Seasonal words" (Manchester, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Liverpool Taffy is one of those can't-put-down-books. The author, Katie Flynn, paints a vivid and interesting story about a young girl's life growing up in Liverpool. The protagonist, Biddy O'Shaughnessy, is made an orphan after her sick mother dies, leaving her destitute and homeless. The only thing Biddy has left to look forward to is her job as a confectioner. But even that begins to get sour when Biddy is asked by Ma Kettle, her boss, to live and work (without pay) for her and the rest of the Kettle family. Ma Kettle tries desperately to keep Biddy under her thumb and make life for her more unbearable. Biddy makes up her mind and leaves the Kettle household, and with the aid of an old friend, she manages to better her life.

As we journey with Biddy, we see her face and overcome difficult and often amusing situations; through this we witness her confidence, courage and her determination to survive. Her gutsy, yet sincere personality is what makes her a believable and strong character. In the latter end her courageous spirit is rewarded when she finds happiness and a soul mate with a Welsh trawler.

The author brings 1930s Liverpool to life in an exciting, warm and gentle way. One can almost feel as though they are stepping back into history. A truly enjoyable and entertaining story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Liverpool taffy, 6 Jan 2008

A fantastic book you can't bear to put it down poor biddy has no choice but to work in kettle's sweet shop like a slave for her keep. You actually find yourself saying for goodness sake girl tell that old ma kettle where to get off but that is only part of the story it gets even better. Its a book to keep as you will surely want to read it again.
