5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure fiction at its best., 6 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Having rediscovered contemporary thriller fiction in the past two years, I have read some of the "best" books around. I stumbled on this one, knew little of Lionel Davidson but I am now after all his books. Absolutely brilliant - the pace, the detail, the storyline, the intellectual challenge to the reader. Once the issue has been identified we have two wonderfully scripted scenarios, the getting in and the getting out. Each in its own way is a separate adventure with quality descriptive writing creating the most atmospheric of reads. For me this was the best book I have read in the past two years and I would not hestitate to recommend it to those who enjoy adventure fiction. It is stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outrageously good read., 22 Aug 2005
This is without question one of the best fiction books I have ever read. Right from the opening lines the plot develops in a very natural and mesmerizing way. It has all the elements of the best thrillers you have ever read and the intrigue of all the best spy novels. The writers skill is such that each character is believable and each twist of the plot engrossing. None of the action is outrageously over the top and as such it is all woven into a gripping and believable story written with immense story teller's skill.

There are very few books that everyone should read. This is one of them. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pacy page-turner, 23 April 2003
By Julie (London England) - See all my reviews
WOW! Lionel Davidson's best book yet. Right from the first page you are drawn into the murky world of a secret Siberian laboratory, and what a hero! Johnny Porter is unique - tough, versatile, skilled and linguistically brilliant, the only man for the job. A dangerous job that demands a specialist. Move over James Bond - this guy can run rings around you!
Read it during a howling dark winter's night for full effect.
