Product Description

Publisher's Weekly

'Had Maxted published this sharp, witty tale of a British woman's love life and real life before the Bridget Jones phenomenon, Fielding's novel might have been noted as a pale comparison.'

Evening Standard

'Witty and clever... Like Bridget Jones, it refuses to gloss over life's ordinary squalor; unlike Bridget, however, its heroine's traumas are serious, giving it an edge which makes her predecessors' worries laughably small. It's compelling, humane and worryingly funny, and better written than many more "literary" novels.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning and so true to life, 4 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This is one of the most true to life books I have ever read. It's funny, sad, bitter, sarcastic, sometimes annoying, sometimes scary, just like life itself - a very honest description of life. I cannot believe this book is seriously being compared to Bridget Jones (which I enjoyed for the "fun" factor, but did not think was great literature) - this is so much more complex and poignant. Helen's relationships with everyone from Fatboy to her mother to her boss sound genuine. I love how each chapter starts with an anecdote that is related to the chapter's topic. To me this book was like a female version of Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" - a stunningly honest description of life as a young adult trying to come to terms with the fact that you don't have all the answers. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Anna Maxted - Stand Up and Receive Applause, 20 Jun 2000
By A Customer
When I initially read the outline of this book I wrongly presumed that this was another amusing tale of a twenty-something bored with her career and manless (cue Bridget Jones). But I was pleasantly greeted with an excellent, touching tale of Helen - recently bereived and dealing with family and personal issues.

An excellent realistic story which really tugs at the heartstrings, as she tries to help her mother, keep her friends, find true love, and find herself in the process. It details too how the loss of a loved one can affect people, and also the tools in an effort to "come to terms" with it. I wish I had had this book to hand for my mum, who lost her mother a few years ago and could not deal with her grief.

Anna has an excellent descriptive nature and style to her writing which includes starting each chapter looking back and reflecting. Really entertaining to read.

Cant wait for the next book if this is the shape of things to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cosy read, 24 Dec 2007
By SJSmith (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I have acquired a few by this author, through charity shop buys and swopping. I thought it best to start with her first novel and I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would be throw-away chick lit. It wasn't.

I read the blurb expecting your Bridget Jones type of character and Helen Bradshaw was nothing of the sort. There are parts of the novel were you do have to suspend reality (but isn't that the joy of chick-lit?) but Helen goes through some traumatic events - most of which are identified on the blurb.

I enjoyed every aspect of this novel, reading about her job, her family, her boyfriends and her friends. I felt comforted and cosy, just what you want when you want to curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine and some choccies!

When I first picked up the book I was worried about how Anna Maxted would fill all those pages with something readable. I was wrong. I sincerely look forward to reading all the others on my shelves, although I hope they don't become formulaic.
