Amazon.co.uk Review

Once upon a not so long ago, historical crime novels were a rare breed. In the dizzying profusion of such titles at present (with anywhere from ancient Rome to Renaissance Italy a fit locale for dark deeds and pre-Holmes detectives), a certain panache is needed to make a new entry rise above the crop. Candace Robb has demonstrated in such novels as The Apothecary Rose and The King's Bishop that her Owen Archer mysteries are worthy successors to the groundbreaking medieval novels of Ellis Peters, full of satisfyingly convoluted plotting. A Trust Betrayed inaugurates a new series of mysteries set in Scotland at the time of Robert the Bruce. In the spring of 1297, Margaret Kerr is afraid that her merchant husband Roger has been caught up in the pending rebellion against the English. Her husband's cousin and factor, Jack Sinclair, agrees to try to locate Roger in the dangerous city of Edinburgh. When he is found murdered, Margaret undertakes to solve the mystery herself, but she quickly discovers that Scotland at war is a very dangerous place for a woman alone. Apart from the effortless conjuring up of historical detail (a sine qua non of the genre), Robb is particularly acute at dealing with issues, such as the place of women in this troubled society: without ever making Margaret a proto-feminist, she cannily examines attitudes to gender in the distant past while never forgetting the imperatives of a rattling yarn. --Barry Forshaw --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

It is the spring of 1297, and young wife Margaret Kerr is desperately afraid. Her merchant husband Roger has been missing since Martinmas. Has he been caught up in the swelling rebellion against the English? Is he even alive? Jack Sinclair, her husband's cousin and factor, has pledged to try to locate Roger in the city. When he is found stabbed to death, Margaret resolves she must ride to Edinburgh herself to uncover the truth. But Scotland is a country at war, Edinburgh an occupied city. With English soldiers patrolling the streets, it is no place for a woman alone. Margaret's mission is frowned upon, her arrival at her uncle's tavern unwelcome. And when she starts to ask questions she finds a city rife with closely guarded secrets and dangerous loyalties. Soon violence erupts outside the tavern and there is murder on their doorstep. Margaret discovers how little she had known either of Roger or Jack...

4.0 out of 5 stars A Trust Betrayed, 15 Jan 2003
By A Customer
I thoughly enjoyed this book. The difference between this and other medieval murder mystery books is that this book features a woman as its "super sleuth". The author incorporates many people in to the plot which was hard at some points to keep up with, but which certainly made the book interesting. I found it was one of those books you simply couldn't put down. My only negative point would be that the ending left you feeling a little cheated. Many questions are left unanswered (issues to cross over to the next instalement) and unfortunatly the book gives no indication when the follow up book will be published. Other than that, a jolly good "who done it", obviously written by someone who has done a lot of medieval research. Reading the book teaches you a lot about the realities of living during this period of Scottish history.

2.0 out of 5 stars "A Trust Betrayed" leaves the reader feeling betrayed, 18 April 2001
By cladonald (Scotland) - See all my reviews
"A Trust Betrayed" is precisely how this book left me feeling. Opening with Margaret looking for her missing husband, it closes with the same dilemma unsatisfactorily unresolved. Doubtless a second book will follow and if this book had worked I should care about what happens next, but I don`t.

The author has obviously researched her historical facts but her storyline, characterisation and feel for the time and place, fail abysmally.

As if this were not bad enough, the final FOURTEEN pages of my edition comprised advertising for the author`s other books. Because this included a 12 page extract from another book readers are badly misled about where the book itself ends.

A poor read, poorly presented.

3.0 out of 5 stars A disappointed Candice Robb fan, 8 Aug 2001
By A Customer
Being a great fan of Candice Robb I was keen to read "A Trust Betrayed" - the first of a series featuring a new female investigator, Margaret Kerr, and set in the time of Robert the Bruce. Candice Robb's books in the past have always gripped the reader as she skillfully paints the settings of her mysteries making them feel a part of past centuries and then adds strong characters who immediately leap from the page to grasp the attention be they hero or villan. Unfortunately this is not the case in her new book. All is grey and dismal like the Scottish weather. The reader does not really care what happens to each character as they too are dull and wooden. This is definitely a card-board cut-out version compared to her previous successes. Despite such a disappointing start, I shall still be interested to read the next in this series. Hopefully she will breathe life into each character and be able to sub-merge the reader in the Edinburgh of the times. Perhaps Candice Robb herself does not yet feel comfortable with her new surroundings but, being such a talented writer, the next in the series must be an improvement.
