Whilst reading Ann Coburn's new novel 'Glint'you have to keep reminding yourself; "This is for Kids".Because otherwise you will forget in about six seconds. And rightly so! This is a hugely enjoyable book. Two stories dovetail beautifully together,one in the real world and one in a medieaval 'Fantasy'realm. And the real world is VERY real;Child abuse,drugs,mental illness and illegal immigration are all covered,without sugar coating (and Coburn never talks down to her audience.) She also manages to introduce some new and wonderfully imaginitive angles to the dragon mythos, as well as dropping in some delicious references to old fashioned fairy tales: the shape-shifting wolf boy in the forest (Red Riding Hood?) The weird old bag-ladyand her bizarre house made from fast food packaging (Hansel and Gretel?) There are some genuine scares the author keeps the action rocking along-building up to a (Literally!) blistering showdown on a castle battlements! The whole thing is cunningly constructed and, by the end, the two worlds are so close together that the space between them shimmers like a taught membrane.
But wait! it's also a 'whodunnit'! The final revelation really did knock me sideways. (Don't bother guessing, there are more red herrings than a russian kipper factory.)
Genuinely moving and genuinely frightening (the evil Duke's awful fiery death will put you off barbecues for a month). 'Glint' is a real gem. A pocket epic. Ideal for kids who want to move up into a more adult world of literature, and for kids like myself who love a good read and have just turned forty two.
