4.0 out of 5 stars Not his best, but a good introduction to this author, 8 Feb 2005
By A Customer
This was the first book by Patrick White that read and I was enthralled. Sufficiently so that I went on to read many others.

As a previous reviewer noted, he has written better novels, one of my particular favourites being 'The Solid Mandala', but this book, one of his earlier works, is a perfectly good introduction to White's world.

2.0 out of 5 stars read this book if you dare..., 16 Sep 2004
Hello.
I read this book after being given it by a friend. I must say, a lot of it was exceedingly slow going for me. The premise of the novel is good, the end is worth the struggles, but unfortunately a lot of the middle bits are just... annoying.

Don't let me put you off. I can imagine some people loving this book. If you like White's style, then this is for you. If you haven't read anything by him before then let me tell you that I found 'Voss' far more wonderful. Longer yes, but also richer.
