Amazon.co.uk Review
"No family should have less than three children. If there is one genius among them, there should be two to support him."
The life of Jacqueline du Pré is an enticing subject for biography. Child prodigy turned superstar cellist, du Pré came from a highly musical family, studied with the greatest musicians in the world, married the pianist Daniel Barenboim during Israel's Six Day War in 1967--and was struck down by multiple sclerosis in 1973, at the age of 28. From then on her deterioration was swift and merciless. In 1987 Du Pré eventually died, unable even to feed herself unaided, let alone play her beloved cello.

Du Pré's closeness to her family--in particular her sister (and early musical rival) Hilary, and brother Piers--has been well-documented, but the publication of A Genius in the Family was a revelation. Among other things came the blithe disclosure that the moody, brilliant du Pré, during a difficult period in her life, regularly slept with Hilary's husband "Kiffer"--with Hilary's blessing. Controversy raged; were Hilary and Piers saints who sacrificed the limelight and their own wishes to placate this temperamental genius? Or was the book a not-so-subtle attempt to destroy the myth of the tragic, beautiful du Pré--and to avenge lives lived in her shadow?

"These are our memories. This book is not a biography nor an account of Jackie's career. It is simply what happened. We offer the reader the story of our family, from within", write the authors in the preface to this memoir. Whatever the motives behind A Genius in the Family, it is a vivid account of the woman behind the icon, and an enthralling read. --Catherine Taylor

Product Description
Since her death in 1987, Jacqueline du Pre's brother and sister have long felt that her life story has never been properly told. This is an extraordinary revealing, often painful, always moving account of what happens when a prodigy is born into a family and how the driving force of an undeniable talent controlled not only her life but theirs. Proud as they were of her success, none of them were prepared for the impact of her genius on their lives and hers. Now, a major motion picture released in the UK in January 1999, "Hilary and Jackie", stars Emily Watson as Jacqueline du Pre.

1.0 out of 5 stars A deeply unpleasant book, 1 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This is a deeply unpleasant book. It reeks of envy from the two siblings of Jacqueline du Pre .

If you really want to know about her and her life buy the Elizabeth Wilson biography which is an accurate biography , warts and all. The version that du Pre gave to her friends of the relationship with Kiffer Finzi is very different indeed .

Buy her CDS read about her but don't waste your time with this .

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're also the fan of Du Pre's, you must read this!!!!!, 24 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Since I was 17 years old, I've fallen love with her music very deeply. After two years, I had ever read this book. Then I became to understand her better! Her life was not so happy, but also unhappy. You can read that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it for yourself, 31 May 2006
By Rachel Smith (Northampton, UK) - See all my reviews
This book is an incredibly moving account of life in the family of one of the greatest musicians ever. It cannot be judged by the reader because no one really knows what it was like to be a sibling of Jacqueline du Pre.
As a straight biography of the cellist, Elizabeth Wilson's book is better, but this book never set out to be a biography, and the authors never claimed that it would be - it is what it says: 'An intimate memoir of Jacqueline du Pre'.
This book records the true feelings of her brother and sister and, whether what is written is factually perfect or not is irrelevent because facts are not feelings and emotions. I do not think that it shows real jealousy of their sister because the overwhelming feeling of the book is that they loved her greatly.
Buy this book if you want to read an emotional and moving account of Jacqueline du Pre.
