1.0 out of 5 stars Bad, sad and pathetically unfunny, as a matter of fact, 17 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Rancid Aluminium (Paperback)
Garbage! Where does one begin with a novel like this? Well, it's extremely badly written, for a start. Ungrammatical (as in Hawes appears unable to write a proper grammatical sentence, which one might think an impediment to a career as a novelist but, apparently not). Very, very unfunny (as in contrived, Carry On style 'humour' of the most naff variety). But if you thought Benny Hill was a master of subtle, sophisticated wit, you might quite like it. Plot (none), characterisation (developed by a child) ... should I go on?...

All-in-all, a truly shameful exercise.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadfully unfunny, 15 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Rancid Aluminium (Paperback)
Mary Louden, reviewing this book in the Times, described it as one of the funniest books she had ever read. You need to get out more often Mary! This is a dreadfully unfunny novel. Contrived, silly and rather boring and, worse still, badly written and ungrammatical. It would also have benefited from the attention of a decent proof reader.

1.0 out of 5 stars Funny? I think I must be missing something!, 9 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rancid Aluminium (Paperback)
I Randomly decided to buy this book after reading the reviews on the back praising the comic genius that, supposedly, is James Hawes. One describes how the road rage scene made her " laugh until she could not breath." What a load of garbage. After finishing that section of the book I found myself baffled as to how someone could describe it in these terms. The whole book was not funny: it was a chore to read, boring, poorly structured and highly cliched: I think we've all heard enough about balding middle aged men to last us a life time. Please don't buy this book...

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb look at early 30's lower middle class angst
