4.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this one down!, 17 Jun 2001

Another great story from Hilary Bonner. The characters are very well thought out and the text flows in such a way as to keep you hooked! This isn't a 'Who-dun-it' style of book, we know which sides everyone's on from the first few chapters. There's some romance, thrills and spills, a few surprises along the way and you really feel for the main character Rose. If you've not read any of Bonner's other works, this is a great book to start with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 3 May 2004
By Dusty (LONDON United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is the best Hilary Bonner yet. Detective Superintendent Karen Meadows becomes more likeable with each book she appears in. She may not have good judgement where men are concerned but her detective skills are well honed and you really feel sorry for her when the enquiry hits some problems. Journalist John Kelly is back too, though his involvement is more oblique this time.

The story develops quickly, the plot with its superb twists and turns kept me reading well into the night, this is not a book you can put down easily.

Richard Marshall is a character you love to hate. His wife and daughters went missing 27 years ago and his explanation of the events surrounding their going, which also have echos in both Meadows and Kelly's childhoods, is less than credible but beware, things are not what they seem.

I have read all Hilary Bonner's previous books and she really does get better and better. Of her three detectives Todd Mallett, Rosie Piper and Karen Meadows, Meadows is undoubtably the best, completely believable. The Devon background is so familiar to me, but even if it weren't this would still be a really gripping read.

I look forward to the next one...........

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read but not very memorable., 3 Jul 2009
By Script Angel (Solihull, England) - See all my reviews
A pretty good, pacey plot with plenty of twists but although I was intrigued by Rose's predicament and internal dilemmas they never really made me feel for her. The story is good, the characters are ok but it didn't really move me. I never really felt that Rose was in any kind of danger, even when I had a good idea of what kind of man Robin really was, which seemed a bit of a shame. That said, still a pretty good page-turner.
