Product Description

England's youngest admiral, Richard Bolitho, pursues a war he knows will not be won. He desires only peace, but it will not be found in the icy Canadian waters, where an angry young nation asserts its identity and men who share a common heritage die in close and bloody action.

Another exciting Bolitho adventure! --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure, depth and pace - a brilliant read!, 9 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cross of St. George (Paperback)
I am an ardent Bolitho fan! I've read all of the 'Bolitho' series, following his career from midshipman on, and this is about the best ever book. It maintains the masterly weaving of history and fiction that is a trademark of Alexander Kent. You don't only read these books you live every breathtaking, heart pounding, thought provoking syllabel of them. The character of Bolitho himself is like a member of your own family, you become so wrapped up in his world and he in yours. When he laughs - you laugh, when he cries - you cry. Allday, Ferguson, the late John Stockdale, Bolitho's first coxwain tragically killed at the Battle of Saintes, even the ghosts live on. If this is the first Bolitho book you've read, I guarantee it won't be the last!

Considering what is comming in the next book i did expect alot more from this book , the sea battles seem to be getting shorter and considering what i have read in the previus books its just not up to kents standard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not one of Kent's best, 7 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cross of St. George (Paperback)
The writing is starting to get too much into the details of the various personalities. Once again poor Thomas is all over the map of his feelings towards richard and Kate. The actions are over before you can get interested in the battles. The battles details are so sparse that it's hard to follow. Why is Adam more destroyed over love than the husband. Val has had much more personality and easier to like in earlier books. Doesn't anyone ever get to be happy in this series?
