Amazon.co.uk Review

After a literally explosive opening where sniper fire cuts through the chest of an unnamed victim (Swagger?), readers of Time to Hunt are plunged into the final years of the Vietnam War and the struggles of Marine Donny Fenn. Stationed in Washington D.C., after recovering from a nearly mortal wound, Fenn is asked to spy on Marines who may have ties to the peace movement. What Donny quickly learns, however, is that his Navy superiors are more interested in framing somebody than they are in finding the truth. In this first section, readers waiting to discover the outcome of the assassination and glimpse Bob "The Nailer" Swagger will instead be swept away by Hunter's vivid painting of the divided loyalties and torn identities that plagued soldiers and citizens in the early 1970s.

But all of this action is only a prelude to Donny's subsequent relationship with Swagger in Vietnam. Hunter fleshes out the mythology that he began to create in Point of Impact as readers watch Swagger add to his famed body count and confront his nemesis, Solaratov. Hunter moves deftly from the mind of Solaratov to Donny and back to Swagger, and in each character finds the core of the Vietnam experience--fear, coldness, sadness, horror, elation. The last two sections cut to contemporary events and find Swagger married to Donny's former love, Julie. Slowly, the events of the first half of the book begin to merge with Swagger's present history and stories that readers will recognize from Hunter's earlier novels. Swagger uncovers a deep connection between the Vietnam demonstrations of the 1970s, the predatory work of the CIA, and the killer who is after him and his family now. Nothing is as it first seems, and readers of Point of Impact and Black Light will have to revise all their expectations. --Patrick O'Kelley --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars TIME TO HUNT, 19 July 2004

TIME TO HUNT by Stephen Hunter

In TIME TO HUNT, which again features the tough, sniper-eyed hero, Bob Swagger he is deep in the jungle of Vietnam. Bob's main concern is to make sure his buddy and comrade in arms, Donny Fenn makes it back safely to base camp. It is Donny's last mission. He will have served his tour of duty. The mission proves uneventful until Bob picks up a May Day call from Team Arizona base camp. Team Arizona are taking heavy incoming fire and are trapped. Due to the appalling weather there is little chance of being air lifted out. Bob sets off to go to their aid. Donny, determined not to leave his buddy without back up cover goes with him. So begins a game of cat and mouse, in which Bob, using his deadly-eyed sniper talents, gradually begins to undermine the platoon of crack Viet Cong troops on their way to eliminate the Arizona base camp.

Preceding this part of the story, Stephen Hunter sets the basis of his novel, (it is a really chunky novel at 595 bullet stopping pages - hence my amazon rating of four instead of the full five points) at the Parade Deck, Washington DC, in which the character of Donny becomes established against the background of civil unrest and anti Vietnam war marches

So the story moves on away from the jungles of Vietnam, ......... to the current day. Bob has completed his tour of duty. It is here that to my mind the most suspenseful part of the story begins. Bob finds that he is he being targeted by an ace sniper who was connected to that same campaign in Vietnam, in which Bob and Donny played such a deadly and active part. Not only does Bob realise that his own life is once again on the line, but also the lives of his wife and child.

What establishes this novel is the detail in which the author gives his readers, about the precision required by a sniper and the difficulties encountered in hitting a target hundreds of yard away. It takes into account the angle of elevation, wind speed factor as well as weather conditions. I found this engrossing.

But to say it is entirely a novel devoted to guns and warfare would be given the wrong impression. It also, towards the second half of the novel, creates a family involvement In which the loyalty and character of Bob's wife is put to the test.

To sum up, if you like a tough-shooting-action- packed-suspense thriller, THE HUNTER, hits the target.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paints scene's like a picture., 11 Jan 2005
This review is from: Time to Hunt (Paperback)
This was the first kinda 'big book' I ever read all by myself. I was about 13. It was a massive hard-back that I chose from the libary because it was about war. I was really taken in by the book and actually really looked forward to reading it on a night, which for an 11 year old is quite something. I can still vividly remeber the book, which is also quite something. I must really credit Stepen Hunter with the amount of detail he includes. I still have vivid memories of the sniper running over the steep terrain of vietnam in the dead of night with his spotter in tow, bumping into the odd NVA patrol and hiding, with the skill and complete invisibility only a sniper could achieve.
I had actually forgotten the name and author of the book (originally remebered it as Point of Impact) until I recently stumbled upon it again. A really engrossing read. A real thriller. Makes one really appreciate the skillful art of the sniper - It's not just being able to shoot.

3.0 out of 5 stars The drawing together of parts, 13 Sep 2003

This review is from: Time to Hunt (Paperback)
This book seems to me to be a bit of an afterthought, but still ultimatly worth the read. Bob-Lee Swagger is pushed slightly to the side and we learn more about his spotter Donny Fenn in the first half of the book. Then in the second half the pace picks up a little with Bob-Lee fighting evil in the way only he can. Hunter should be proud that he has created this character, as at the end of this, the third book containing him i really felt "inside" the book. The ending is slightly Deaver-esque for those who crave twists in the tail
