Review

In the latest of Arrow's The Big Idea series, Darwin and Evolution, Paul Strathern demonstrates the scale of Darwin's outstanding insight in this witty and intensely readable biography. With an unashamedly 20th-century perspective, Strathern shows that Darwin, though flawed, was genius enough to overturn the preconceptions of Victorian society. Get out there and buy the rest. The New Scientist

Product Description

At a moment of great discovery, one Big Idea can change the world...When it was first published, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, with its now commonplace central idea of 'natural selection', scandalised the world. But in the context of modern times, how do we grasp just how original and daring it was in 1859? "Darwin & Evolution" is a riveting look into the life of Charles Darwin and his reluctant rise from being a quiet and eccentric bug enthusiast to one of the greatest scientists of all time. "Darwin's Big Idea" is explained in a straightforward and gripping style, providing an account of the importance of his groundbreaking voyage on HMS Beagle, and the implications of his revolutionary concept of evolution. "The Big Idea" series is a fascinating look at the greatest advances in our scientific history, and at the men and women who made these fundamental breakthroughs.

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining and irreverent introduction to the subject, 31 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Paul Strathern has a special talent for writing easy introductions to complex subjects, from Pythagoras to Einstein - in fact he appears to have contributed ALL the titles in the "Big Idea" series! This one is written in the form of a potted biography of Darwin. Strathern engages the reader with lots of chatty anecdotes and colourful detail, and is agreeably irreverent about the man himself. But he also shows clearly where Darwin got his ideas from, and what kind of evidence led him to his particular "big idea". Most interesting is the way it shows him developing (evolving?) from an eccentric and introverted bug collector to a giant in the history of science. At 90 short pages, you could read the whole book at one sitting, but you'll probably want to read it again just for the pleasure of it. My only complaint is that the bibliography is limited to books by and about Darwin - I would have liked him to mention a couple of outstanding examples of more recent research confirming evolution, eg Weiner's "The Beak of the Finch" or Pat Shipman's "Taking Wing"

1.0 out of 5 stars unhelpful, 5 Feb 2009
Paul Strathern is a hack who writes dumbed-down books about highly intellectual subjects. This book is no exception - all you 'learn' is that Darwin was a boring old bug collector. If you want to understand evolution read something by Richard Dawkins or Steve Jones - but not this
