4.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down, 30 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I decided to read some of Ellroy's stuff after seeing LA Confidential. That was 18 months ago and I finally got around to reading Clandestine last week. The book offers everything you'd expect - a hard boiled detective thriller with more twists than Chubby Checker. However, it is at times a bit cliched (like this review) - think Jack Nicholson in Chinatown. Anyway, read it and make up your own mind, I'm not going to do your thinking for you....all i can say is that i plan to read the rest of his novels in quick succession. Cheers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chilling parallels with Ellroy's own life, 25 April 1999
By A Customer
Although "Clandestine" isn't vintage James Ellroy, the plot wanders a bit in the middle, it still leaves you feeling like you've been hit by a truck. For anyone who has read about Ellroy's background (See 'My Dark Places') there are chilling parallels within the plot to the authors own life.If you are an Ellroy fan I'd recommend "my Dark Palces". Read it and you'll see all his other work in a new light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!, 28 Nov 2001
By A Customer
"Clandestine" is way up there alongside "The Black Dahlia", possibly because of its similar storylines, but not as good as "Dahlia". Unlike other Ellroy novels that I've read, this one ends with a rather cheery disposition for Ellroy standards. It is flawed, but the depth of character and plot covers any discrepancies.
