5.0 out of 5 stars The Best 1st World War Fictional Story Based on Fact., 7 Jul 2002
By J.E.TAYLOR (East Sussex, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Covenant with Death (Paperback)
This is the best WW1 book I have ever read. Unlike 'Birdsong' which in my opinion is not in the same class. If you are looking for a love theme then this is not the book for you, but if if you are looking for a story of how keen young men are lead to their deaths by 'donkeys' and the comradeship they forge with one another before the slaughter then this is a book you should read. It is one of my Desert Island books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best written war story ever, 13 Jun 2003
This review is from: Covenant with Death (Hardcover)
I have traveled the world for work during the last 10 years, and during that time I have bought and read 100's of books of many different styles and subjects. As I have left each home I have had to leave many valued possessions behind, but 2 constants exist in that I have always packed my very battered, paperback copy of this book and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
This book demonstrates the very best of ideals amongst friends in very desperate times, you sense that you know the characters and feel the pain and suffering that they feel.
The climax of book contains some of the best and most graphic writing on the battle and its tragic aftermath you could read.
I could not put this book down on any of the many occasions that I have read it, and I very highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Great Uncle Roddy, 16 Dec 2005
By Mr Neil Caisley (Wheathampstead, Herts United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The main character in John Harris's book is my Great Uncle Roddy Rodinson.

As other reviewers' have said, the last 100 pages of the book leave you breathless. It is even more unbelievable when you actually go and stand at the point where he and his'Sheffield Pals' went over the top on 1st July 1916.
Today's peace and tranquility masks the horror of that day.Standing in the copse of trees you can still make out the trenches and pick up the detritus of war. Well worth a visit.
