5.0 out of 5 stars A new twist!, 31 May 2000
By A Customer
Pel and the Death of the Detective introduces a new twist to this fine series of novels about a curmudgeonly but lovable French detective. The usual question that keeps a reader turning the pages of a detective novel is "Whodunnit?" In this book, the question of who's responsible for a series of bomb blasts may be the mystery that faces Pel and his team of detectives, but it's not the mystery that most enthralls the reader. The book's title tells us that one of Pel's team is going to die. Which one? This would be gripping enough for a new reader, but for those of who have read Pel for years, it's poignant as well. There are a number of false leads. Detectives have narrow escapes or survive attacks. When the death does come, it's sudden, unexpected, and shocking. The funeral that follows is perhaps the most heart-rending scene to have appeared in a Pel mystery. Read this new Pel, but don't expect a whodunnit so much as whosgonnadie.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best yet!, 30 May 2000
By A Customer
If you are already a fan of the series, then the title of this latest novel will be enough to make you read on. And you won't be disappointed... This is a roller-coaster of a story, told in such a way that your heart will be racing in time with, if not faster than, that of the French detectives' as they try to anticipate the next target of a group of ruthless terrorists. As for which member of the Pel team is alluded to in the title, well, that would be giving the game away, but you won't be able to put the book down until you find out. And when you do, make sure you have a large box of tissues close to hand. You will enjoy "Death of a Detective". It is, without a doubt, the best Pel yet. And if you aren't already a fan, after reading this book you will be!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense has now been added to the old atmosphere. Gripping!, 27 May 2000
By A Customer
Pel always was the natural successor to Maigret in terms of the authenticity of the novels. Now JH has sorted out the least desirable of her characters (any futher comment would give away more than the title of the book - - what a clever device, by the way!)without any loss of authentic French atmosphere and real "can't put down" compulsion to boot. Roll on the next one!
