Amazon.co.uk Review
While many literary detectives have traversed to various media, the adventures of the quirky French detective Pel continue to swell within the confines of the printed page. Prior to creator Mark Hebden's death, the witty, brilliant, Gauloise-addicted 'tec undertook 17 cases and the mantle has passed to his daughter Juliet, for whom Pel is Provoked is her fifth contribution to the series. Through her, Pel has undergone an evolution, retaining his original charm but adapting to a modern, gritty darkness. The plot sees a nurse and her dialysis patient brutally murdered. It becomes clear that they were having an affair and their deaths may be linked to the deaths of two girls in France and Spain who bore strange teeth marks on their necks. Vampires? Perhaps a seemingly innocent religious cult can provide the answers. Like the best detective yarns, the Pel tales provide a superb cohesion of intricate plot, character dynamic and breathless pace with the bonus of raucous wit. Here, Hebden introduces a "mismatched partners" angle with the arrival on the team of Jourdain, a punk detective who is a great foil for the domineering Pel. Gripping and hilarious, this is a compelling entry in a series that deserves far more recognition. --Danny Graydon

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Juliet Hebden mystery yet., 18 May 1999
By A Customer
Pel is the best detective still confined to the printed page. Created by Mark Hebden, he is French, brilliant, self-deprecating, funny, balding, addicted to Gauloises, and married to a woman beautiful beyond his comprehension. Mark Hebden wrote 17 Pel novels before his death. His daughter, Juliet Hebden, has now written 5. In many ways, they are better than her father's. Pel is Provoked begins with the bloody murder of a dialysis patient and his nurse. The plot thickens when it becomes apparent that the two were having an affair and that their murder may be linked to a local religious cult and the deaths of two teenage girls, with mysterious bite-marks on their necks, in France and Spain. Flawless plotting, sharply-drawn characters, and a fine sense of pace, frequently punctuated by descriptions that make the reader laugh out loud, make this the kind of murder strory to be read and enjoyed in a single sitting. A delightful bonus in this novel is the addition to Pel's team of Officer Jourdain, a punk Huguenot whose "spiky blonde hair" makes her "look as if she'd stuck her fingers in a faulty plug." Jourdain drives her police car "like Alain Prost" and stands up to the domineering Pel with surprising confidence. Before the story's over, she will have risked her life to infiltrate the Sunshine Sect and solve the mystery. You should read Pel is Provoked. Someone should make a TV series out of the Pel novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and frightening: The best yet!, 7 May 1999
By A Customer
I have read all of Juliet Hebden's books in the Pel series, and most of those writen by Mark Hebden. Juliet has taken a well rounded, funny, interesting, lovable and reliable team of characters and propeled them into the exciting, sometimes grim but always gripping world that even Pel's beautiful corner of France has inevitably become as we approach the new millenium - without for one second loosing or spoiling the atmosphere, warmth, colour or intrigue originally created by Mark Hebden. She has added meat to the bone (splattering more that just a little blood along the way!). As for this book in particular, Pel is Provoked only confirms that Juliet Hebden's writing is evolving with every tome! A well assembled mix of jealousy, murder, hot weather, hostages and Gauloises that will leave you fighting between fear and laughter! It's brilliant and certainly the best yet! Modern and compelling: every page was a pleasure - I only wish there was something even remotely as good on our screens! Fantastic!
