Product Description

This account will not hide from the truth of what this illness does to the one who is suffering, and to all those whom that person loved the most. Above all, however, I want to write this book because my story, which is also Emma's and that of our three wonderful children, is nevertheless a story of hope.' I Want My Mummy Back is Jon's Nicholson's moving account of how he and his children coped when their mother was diagnosed with the cancer that ultimately took her life. Here he writes about how her illness put unimaginable strains on the relationship with his wife and the loved ones around them and how as a family they coped and pulled together in the dark days after her death to discover a life that although very different from the one they had planned is happy. Jon Nicholson lost his wife to osteosarcoma, a very rare form of bone cancer. Emma died in 2004, just 14 months after being diagnosed.

He has also published a number of books including the critically acclaimed Ganges.

2.0 out of 5 stars Brutally Honest!, 12 Jul 2008
By Debbie (England) - See all my reviews
I am afraid that I felt angry quite often whilst reading this book. I had obtained it from Amazon in 24 hours as soon as my Mother rang to tell me that she had seen an interview regarding this book. I lost my son to Osteosarcoma in October 2005, he was diagnosed officially in July 2003 at the Stanmore by the same Doctor as Emma and went on to have treatment at the Middlesex under the same Oncologist, all the same chemo etc. Reading the book, was from that perspective, very interesting as names and places took me back in time to our experience. However, although it helped me to reiterate the normality of the backlash that carers have to endure from the patients, I kept wanting to see unconditional love pouring out of Emma's husband and I didn't grasp this, I kept feeling that there was a sense of it all being one big inconvenience and I felt so deeply sorry for Emma's family and friends that seemed to be excluded from her care. I wanted to jump between the pages and care for her like I had my own son. I do not doubt that Jon loved his wife, but I was never moved to tears through compassion, and I had thought that I would be inconsolable. I have written a book about my account from a Mothers view, of our experience, and there is so much interest in it from our community but I cannot get a publisher to even look at it for me. What constitutes a great book nowadays? I'm sorry, I'm not being purposefully harsh, I was just very disappointed and frustrated and wanted at the end of the book to contact Emma's Mum and give her one almighty hug. This was her only child dying from a horrific illness. It seemed that from the moment of diagnosis, Emma never stood a chance, she seemed to be surrounded by so much negativity. I will say one thing though, Jon Nicholson was honest, brutally!

5.0 out of 5 stars please read this book, 12 Jul 2008

This is an amazing, well written, emotional. painful and honest account of a husband losing his wife and mother of his three children to cancer.
I too lost my husband suddenly from a brain bleed nine years ago, and i have two children. This is the first book that i have read that totally mirrored my thoughts and feelings and left me feeling that someone else had reacted as i had. I finished the book in one day as it is so beautifully written you cannot put it down.I truly would urge anyone who is going through the painful experience of losing someone to read this book and to pass it on to a friend, as we all can learn valuable life lessons from this wonderful author.

2.0 out of 5 stars Harsh and brutal, 8 April 2009
By Ruth Wallace (herts uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read this book with an open mind and found it to be very harsh. I felt Emma's family were completely shut out of her illness by her husband. I felt angry that he seemed to forget the same love and care he spoke of regarding his children he appeared to forget that Emma was someone elses daughter, sister and friend and seemed to disregard her parents, family and friends feelings totally, I as a mother would be very hurt by reading this about my daughter. I found certain parts of the book really upsetting and wonder how his children will feel on reading this book in the future. His description of removing his dead wifes rings was without empathy or consideration for her family. I was left feeling cross and upset for Emmas family and wonder how much hurt this book has caused them
