5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring AND Real!, 21 Feb 2006
By Leo Jay (Jersey City, USA) - See all my reviews
For me, one of the important things that separates this book from much of the well-intended self-empowerment literature is that it anticipates the significant emotional challenges a reader may encounter in his journey, and offers wisdom and guidance to see a way through. Unsupportive partners, friends and family; financial difficulties; self-doubt (even despite obvious talent) – these are some of the very real, very daunting challenges one can face once the initial "Just Do It!" euphoria fades. I've seen a fair number of books that do a good job of addressing the logistical and organizational challenges of career/life changes, but too frequently, these books gloss over – or completely ignore – the significant emotional challenges. By her own powerful example -- illustrated with candor and humor in equal measure – Souter serves as the most powerful of mentors – one who has seen the challenges, experienced the hardships, made the mistakes, and emerged not only stronger but more fiercely committed. Readers who are serious about pursuing their creative dreams will be best served by guidance that is simultaneously grounded, supportive, encouraging and inspiring – those adjectives accurately describe Souter's wonderful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A road map to your dream, 19 Feb 2006
By Janet Wood (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is an invaluable road atlas - a must for emerging artists at any stage of their creative journey.

Tessa Souter cheers you on your way with practical advice and exhilarating inspiration, in an accessible conversational style that makes the reader want to keep turning the pages whilst simultaneously not wanting to finish.

With refreshing honesty and generosity of spirit Tessa charts her own progress first as a writer and then as a singer, drawing on the tales of fellow travellers in these and other artforms. She tackles everything from the nuts and bolts of getting started, through coping with milestones and rocks in the road, to taboo subjects such as managing jealousy and other baggage you may be carrying.

The book is arranged with clear signposts to content, quirky subheadings borrowed from songs, and "hot tips". You very quickly come to trust Tessa as your guide because it's clear she's been there.

In short, this book is your map, your travel insurance and your roadside recovery on the long and winding road to your dream - don't leave home without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars How It Really Is, 27 April 2006
First of all I have to declare an interest, as I am mentioned several times in the book as one of the people who helped in her success. Tessa is a very inspiring person, and has achieved an amazing transition in her own life from one successful field of work into another entirely different one. Both of them are very hard to make your name in.

The thing I most like about the book is that she tells us how she did it but never pretends for a moment that it was easy. This is absolutely not the standard "rose-tinted spectacles" personal development book. But she doesn't just tell you how she did it, but also tells you how you can do "it" too - whatever your own personal "it" is.

As one might expect from a former internationally known journalist, she has a very engaging writing style which makes the book exceptionally readable.
