Product Description

Review
"'When you're bored of comedians telling you things you know and the comfortable laughter of recognition, go and watch Janey Godley for a change. You don't know what it's like to be Janey Godley - she does. And she can tell you all about it with wit, spirit and a truly unique comic voice.' Dave Gorman"

The Observer
A remarkably engaging and fluently written memoir of a life that makes the McCourt family look like the Von Trapps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just amazing!, 20 Jun 2005
By A Customer
I was stunned by this book,it's not just a book about an abused child, in fact it is so much more. I laughed and cried and could not stop turning the pages constantly I sat up all night to read it through. She is a funny woman in real life as I have saw her comedy shows in london, but to know her so much more is just fantastic. I loved the book. The stories about the guns and gangsters are just so real and gripping it made me surprised about her life, she doesn't seem like a gangster's moll at all when you meet her.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written with no purpose to it, 27 April 2008
By whatlep (Worcestershire, UK) - See all my reviews
This a quite remarkably badly written book. The subject matter is certainly there (abused as a child, marries into a gangster family, runs a pub in a dodgy area of Glasgow), yet the book fails to engage or provide a narrative thread.

The central issue is that of the author's abuse as a child and all that that then leads to as an adult. However, the story as written is so confused, with neither understandable sequencing of events, nor any kind of proper end to it, that the book descends into a series of badly documented vignettes, largely featuring "20 years after" speeches which cannot conceivably be accurate.

Not worth buying other than for 1p from your local market stall. Even then, think twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handstands in the Dark, 24 Mar 2006
By Miss R Akroyd (West Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is amazing! It was not what I expected but a million times better, I honestly could not put this book down, I was reading it at work when I was supposed to be working and reading it whilst walking down the street even though my hands were freezing
Its written brilliantly in a no nonsense way to tell the story how it really was. This woman has been nothing but brave and courageous I truly admire her
