Product Description

Product Description

The only book on dyslexia written especially for teenagers (14-18 years) with their specific needs in mind Dyslexia, involving problems with reading, writing, spelling, memory, organization and time management, can affect people of all backgrounds and abilities. But diagnosis and self-help books are geared to the very young - little is done to help the older child who faces unique problems and requires different strategies to solve them. At a time when unaffected children have problems with self-esteem; are challenged at school and have to cope with extensive revision for exams, the dyslexic child can be totally at sea. "Dyslexia: A Teenager's Guide" helps young adults tackle these problems with practical strategies uniquely suited to them. Clearly and simply written by a leading expert in the field, the book helps with reading, writing, spelling, memory and provides tips on how to take notes and organize study; how to deal with exams and use IT. It also shows how to improve confidence and assertiveness, and how to build on the creative talent that many dyslexics have. Author Bio: Dr. Sylvia Moody has a PhD in Psychology, a diploma in Clinical Psychology and is Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She runs the Dyslexia Assessment Service in London. She has written children's books and is co-author of "Dyslexia in the Workplace" (Whurr Publishers, The Dyslexia Adults Link Book of the Year 2000).

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant study guide for dyslexic and dyspraxic teens, 11 Nov 2004
By A Customer
I have dyspraxia, and my special needs teacher recommended this book to me as an organisational help. The author covers all sorts of different topics that are affected by dyslexia and dyspraxia, offering some really useful schoolwork strategies that I have begun using. I like the fact that the stories of two teenagers, one with dyslexia, the other with dyspraxia, have been woven into the book - their stories bring the book alive. As a teenager myself, I feel comfortable hearing my disability described in another teenager's voice - when doctors do it, I'm usually tempted to think, "How do you know?"

This wasn't the case here. Moody's tone is always upbeat and never becomes patronising. If you or someone you know has dyslexia or dyspraxia, don't miss this one. The only fault I found, which knocked off one star, is the lack of attention paid to socialising and making friends. This isn't an issue for dyslexics, but it can be a bad one for many dyspraxics. As Moody states in her intro that the book is of equal use to teenagers with dyspraxia, I think she should have addressed this fundamental dyspraxic problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air for dyslexic teenagers, 15 Sep 2004
By S Close (Euston, London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Dr Moody's book is a down-to-earth, easy to read (and understand!)guide for dyslexic children, their parents or carers. It takes a step by step approach to dyslexic difficulties and offers suggestions on how to cope with them - covering very practical tasks (advice on reading, writing, spelling, memory etc) and then goes on to investigate the negative emotional problems many dyslexics face. There are clear pictures and diagrams to illustrate how to put coping strategies into practice, and the overall layout of the book makes it simple to follow.
