5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Dog Lovers, 29 Aug 2007
By Alan Williams "tonto" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you are a "dog" person then this is definately a book for you. Recreating Steinbecks Travels with Charlie, Bruce Fogle sets off across America, accompanied by his faithfull companion Macy the Golden Retriever. A great travelogue in addition, this book made me almost want to jump in a camper van myself and head off into the wilderness.

2.0 out of 5 stars lacklustre, 4 Sep 2009
I love books about animals but I found this a lacklustre read . Fogle does not come across as being a vet empathic to all animals...he writes with glee about choosing a lobster in a bar to be boiled alive for his supper, than later he describes using live grasshoppers to stick on his fishing hooks.

The book is not really about his dog Macey, but rather about him and his opinions as he travels the states. You don't get a sense that the author really connects with the environment or the wildlife and that makes the book too clinical for my taste.

I wondered if he had an editor but as he gives credit to her, he must have. Grammar errors throughout, and the text jumps from one topic to another in a haphazard way.
