1.0 out of 5 stars Blight on a great reputation ?, 13 Nov 2006
By C. Turner "digitizeme" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the first de Bono book I have read and it is bitterly disappointing. Large point size and double spacing are never a good sign and this book is lightweight with a capital 'l'. Platitudes abound and useful insight is almost entirely absent. An example picked completely at random: 'Having a small celebration or treat when a child achieves something important can be very valuable. Indeed, adults should take time to celebrate their achievements as well'. Well I never ! Sometimes de Bono descends into drivel: 'You see everything, or do you ? There are no blind spots and you probably do not have a migraine which can greatly reduce your vision. Everything is as it was. Everything is as it should be. You know that. But do you see it ?'. I have not made this up, its in black and white on page 26. How about 'Perception is far more important than most people think. There is the belief that everyone can see 'the truth'. There is the belief that everyone can see things as they really are. Brass, however, can be perceived as gold'. What ?!? And this from a man who boasts of being one of the 250 most influential thinkers in history. Its staggeringly awful. Do not waste your money. This type of nonsense cannot be the basis for de Bono's extraordinary reputation. I'm going to read 'Lateral Thinking' and hope for better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gold Medal, 12 Aug 2009
By N. I. Khan "Nadim" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Very concise and practical method to helping you identify the impact of a 'decision, project, activity or change'. The 'Value Scanning' technique which this book centres on is briefly referred to in De Bono's other books such as Six Thinking Hats and Six Frames: For Thinking About Information.

The heart of the book is about moving away from subjective views on value which is limited by a person 'perspective' (i.e. the previous experiences, beliefs etc), to a more objective, broader view that generates a wider perspective. As he keeps saying in all his books, most mistakes are caused by limited perspective.

This book is an effective alternative to the common way decision are arrived at which is to eliminate options based on limited criteria early on, in order to make selection simpler (i.e getting to a choice between two or three). It complements 'Stakeholder Analysis' by helping you to focus on aspects of typical stakeholders e.g. quality of service, your own reputation.

Effectively, it leads you to a scoring system which can be performed by the team together or individually first.

The Six Medals analogy, as with the Six Thinking Hats, are a brilliant way to remember the method and also to communicate with.
