5.0 out of 5 stars Help from the heart, 3 Nov 2003
By A Customer
We all buy parenting books when our kids are little and then forget about the whole idea of seeking advice when they grow out of the toddler stage and stop trying to drink bleach or fall out of trees. But the fact remains that parenting only gets harder as kids grow up as older kids seem to be able to talk their way out of just about anything.
Cassandra Jardine's book is a wonderful, well-written book aimed at the parent who wants to bring a little bit more structure to family life without sacrificing warmth, humour and the "family discussion". She points out that kids of all ages need to be trained - they can't just learn good table manners, for example, by being shouted at day after day. In a simple, non-preachy manner, the author sets out a series of 17 steps to achieve a happier, more organized family life. Even though my kids are sulky teens, I'm already finding that her methods work. And I found some of them useful in dealing with my 87-year old dad! I only wish the publishers had the good sense to attach a pencil to this book so I could have underlined the best bits for easy reference. I heartily recommend this book to anyone with children - it gives you confidence for doing what must be the hardest but most important job there is.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book ever!, 8 Dec 2003
This book is absolutely brilliant - a definite must for all parents, good or bad. Cassandra has written about all the real and potential problems that us parents have to deal with on a daily basis and all her advice works!! Above all, this book explains that children need to be respectful and co-operative in everything they do, not just for the sake of their parents, but also for their own future happiness. A selfish or badly behaved child will have less friends than others, will be more prone to bullying and being bullied and will always be the last choice of a flatmate. I particularly like the chapter on sibling rivalry - it will definitely be read by both of my children (aged 18 & 20)when they come home for Christmas! This is a great Christmas present for anyone with children and I am going to recommend it to all my clients.

5.0 out of 5 stars Model excellence, 18 Feb 2008
It is surely self-evident that we live in an era when letting children do what they want works no better than placing them in a metaphorical straight-jacket. To this end, Cassandra Jardine strikes the perfect balance between structure and risk. Let parents find out what works best and model it. The model may well be our parents, but unless the world stands still, what worked a generation ago needs updating. Here is the updated model. Read the book and become a better parent!
