Product Description

Product Description
Faced with a perpetual mealtime battle with her baby Millie, Jennie Maizels discovered it wasn't that Millie did not want eat, she just didn't want to be spoon-fed by anyone else. Faced with this independence, Jennie Maizels was forced to dream up ideas for foods that Millie could hold, like a mini pizza or a rice ball, until she was able to feed herself, and life became simple again. But all babies go through a stage when finger-held foods are the best way to feed them. Jenny Maizels has come up with a beautifully illustrated book using a wide range of healthy ingredients, cooked and uncooked, hot and cold, savoury and sweet.

About the Author
Jennie Maizels is the illustrator and author of many children's books, including The Wonderful World Book and The Super Science Book. She lives with her husband and baby Millie in Brighton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finger Foods for Babies and Toddlers, 12 Sep 2003
By A Customer
An excellent guide for anyone feeding a child old enough to have sense of independence, but young enough to have difficulty with the etiquette of cutlery! The basic information sections should help compile a storecupboard of easily obtainable and useful fallback ingredients, and the recipes are easy to follow, and often quick to make. The results have the approval of my 20 month old child!! The aim is to provide good, nutritious and non-faddy meals which are easily (and not too messily) eaten without use of cutlery - although we have progressed, helped by the dips section of this book, to more use of a spoon, via vbegatble and fruit finger and mini pittas. The author wanted to make mealtimes fun and enjoyable, instead of a battleground, and I think succeeds. Particular highpoints - mini muffins (as popular with grown up family as small people), fishcakes and homemade ketchup and guacamole. My only criticism, if I had to make one, is that the use of cartoon style drawings may be more attractive to the children eating the food than adults preparing it, and I would have like to see proper pictures of the intended end results - but frankly, this is being picky in the extreme with a book I have been very well pleased with and have made much use of! I would happily recommend this to any parent who likes to know what goes into their child's food, and wants to be confident that the food will literally go down well, but doesn't want to spend hours scouring shops for exotic and hard to find ingredients, or hours preparing and cooking meals. The guidance on storage and freezing is exceptionally clear and concise, and the nutritional information extends to a short specific note on every dish included, as well as general comment. A small but invaluable guide!

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended to any parent with a 'fussy eater'., 2 Sep 2004

My 20 month old son is very choosy about what he eats, but loves savoury and sweet biscuits and snacks (much to my horror). As well as the huge selection of recipes in this book, there are also recipes for biscuits, snacks and treats so at least I know he's not eating processed junk. Each recipe gives details of the 'nutritional value' in plain English. I'm writing this review today as I'm in Amazon to order a copy for a girlfriend having similar eating problems with her 13 month old girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough: babies and children can eat the same food as adults!, 9 Aug 2006
By Anonymous (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
Alleluia! A book that aims to have babies and toddlers eating 'grown-up' food. In today's culture of kiddy menus, and food marketed purely at children, we need a lot more of this kind of book. And the recipes are lovely. The healthy banana cakes get rave reviews all around, even when made by me!

This book is an absolute godsend. It came out long before the Baby lead weaning craze, so it's more for older babies, but the recipes are really inventive. Read more
