Product Description

Product Description

As a child grows and develops inside its mother's womb, parents constantly ask each other 'What's happening with the baby now?' As a result of Alexander Tsiaras' remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology, they can turn to the pages of this extraordinary book for an answer at any point during the pregnancy - from conception to birth. "From Conception to Birth" is based on HVO revolutions in science. As biologists have decoded the molecular basis of life, computer scientists have developed three-dimensional techniques for scanning and displaying the body; which can isolate nervous, skeletal, circulatory systems and view them down to a molecular level. Alexander Tsiaras founded his medical imaging company Anatomical Travelogue on these discoveries, and his scanning techniques promise a completely new way for doctors to examine and diagnose their patients, and also make it possible to track the development of human beings from the moment of conception. If the science behind this book is fascinating, the images themselves are spectacular, showing the never-before-witnessed process of human creation in astonishingly beautiful detail, as we see the eye appear, the heart and lungs start to work, the hands grow and flex.

5.0 out of 5 stars A vital window into everyones past, 2 Jun 2003
By Jonathan Stevens (oxford uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am fascinated by developmental biology and during my reading of the subject I have not come across a book so beautifully presented and so helpful in translating two-dimensional descriptions of development into a three dimensional process.

The pictures of the embryo's in this book are amazing; they cover each major stage of development in each layer of the embryo (e.g. the nerves are separately depicted as are muscles etc) and are well annotated. I have yet to read the text as the pictures are so absorbing.

This book is a wonderful, easily accessible depiction of a vital part of every person's individual past, in every corner of the world. We all share the developmental processes shown in this book; indeed we were these embryos, this is where we came from. I came away from this book with a newly awakened sense of awe of the process of development that created or will create every single person in the past, present or future. If only we could live up to the beautiful process that created us.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than just pictures..., 17 Nov 2002
This is indeed an extremely informative and interesting book full of colourful images that allow you to comprehend exactly how the human foetus develops within its mother.

Very useful piece of reading if you know nothing about the human growth process. This book covers every aspect of the development process showing clear images of the various stages. ie 4 weeks, 8 weeks etc.

The text is easy to read and digest. It takes the reader into a more detailed and indepth overview of each vital component, its dependencies and function.

Further information relating to digestion, organs, oxygen, toxins, waste elimination, movement, nervous system, blood pressure, sensory development and human architecture are all covered in some detail.

A good addition to anyone's collection that certainly won't grow outdated. Excellent gift idea!
