4.0 out of 5 stars Good, 29 Sep 2003
Not even close to being as good as "Playgrounds of the Gods" but still a worthwhile read . I would think that the appeal of this book would be restricted to golf fans only and therin lies the problem , there are some flaws in golfing terminology particularly regarding the handicap system etc.
Mr Stafford is also of the opinion that if he scores 9 over par on any course this will make him a 9 (single figured) handicap, which is not the case.
However despite these small critisisms this is still a readable book , efforts at the World Ice -golf , indoor putting and mini golf championships all are observed in a very warm, interesting style and the golfing personalities that Mr Stafford meets all come over as fun loving and human.
Worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars In Search of the Tiger, 18 Mar 2004
By A Customer
As a non-golfer, I was intrigued to read how Ian Stafford fared in his task to go from a non-golfer to a semi-competent one in 18 weeks. Stafford gets his tale across well, culminating in an almost-accidental meeting with Tiger Woods. I enjoyed the varied stories, from ice-golfing in Greenland, to mini-golf in the Czech Republic, and never felt that I was missing anything by my lack of golfing knowledge. Therein lies the measure of the book - you don't need to be a golfer to like it, but a willingness to pop out to a driving range and see what he's on about may well result!
One final note - Ian is not trying (as stated in another review) to get a handicap of 9 or under - he just wants to score one round of 9 (or better) over par, a point that is pretty much central to the book, as he struggles from over 100 down to 86 and back up again.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book, 29 Oct 2007

What I really liked about this book was how I could relate to the trials and tribulations that Ian went through on his "Golfing Odyssey". It was reassuring with an obvious talent for sport as written about in his other highly enjoyable books - and playing regular golf with some pretty amazing sports men and women - Ian was still shooting in the 90's. It certainly makes me feel much happier about my game.

I am intrigued to know whether in the 3 years since writing this book : Ian is still as golf mad, achieved an eagle or albatross & finally whether he had achieved the round 9 over par.

Highly entertaining read - especially if you enjoy golf.
