With credentials that include extensive training in medicine and complementary treatments, over 10 years practising at the highly respected Hale Clinic, and a total 20 years dealing with back problems, Dr Ali's Ultimate Back Book is set to be useful at the very least. With its analysis of the structure of the body, and its emphasis on a holistic lifestyle in relation to preventing and treating back problems, this is insightful and essential reading for both professional practitioners and sufferers alike.

Part one looks at how the back works, with nine chapters covering muscles, posture and the spine. Part two's eight chapters on when things go wrong, analyse every type of backache from computer-related to lying down causing problems. Ali's basic argument is that treating pain ignores the cause. His premise is that there are different types of muscle fibre, and that muscles are at the root of the problem. "The anti-gravitational force created by posture-controlling muscles and general muscle tone is the most important factor for back health", asserts Ali. According to Ali developing and maintaining healthy muscles to support posture is crucial, though this is not to be confused with working out at the gym.

Along with an analysis of available treatments, Ali highlights the benefits of yoga in particular, and suggests treatment and care for each type of problem. Though it might be tempting to go for the quick fix and skip to the index, it's well worth reading this in its entirety. I put up with sporadic but quite bad back pain for years, thinking it was inevitable part of having kids, desk job and just generally getting older! Last year though after I read The Integrated Health Bible I gradually started to put into practice some of the ideas that Dr Ali suggested for back problems. I made changes to my diet, took up Pilates and booked myself in for a monthly massage. I also became more aware of my (bad) posture and the stupidly heavy handbag I'd been lugging around on my poor shoulder. The result was that over 6 months went by without any backache. It wasn't an overnight transformation but slowly the pain became less and less until I couldn't quite remember how much it had hurt in the first place! I got a copy of this new book to make sure I kept up the good work. Dr Ali's approach is very thorough and doesn't give you any quick fixes. But take it from me, if you try even just a few of his suggestions your backpain could really be a thing of the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Ultimate Back Book, 16 April 2007
I suffered with back muscle pain for a year after driving a car with really poor driving position, resulting in complete paralysis. I tried the doctors and Osteopaths and they provided quick fixes - drugs and joint manipulation. But this problem kept re-occuring.
I saw Dr Ali on television and bought his book along with back books by other authors.
I followed his recommendations, drinking lots of water, stretching and strengthening excercises and changed diet etc.
3 years later I still do the excercises occasionally - but have no problems at all.
I've chucked all the other books - this is all you need.
PS. I sold the car as well - I now have an automatic Volvo !
