Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The award-winning Are You Dave Gorman? is the oddly touching story of how Perrier Award nominee Dave Gorman went in search of all the world's other Dave Gormans.

Fans of the TV version of this travelogue-cum-Arthurian-quest will know how it all began: one minute Dave and his flatmate Danny Wallace (himself a talented producer and writer) were kicking their heels in suburban London, the next they were on the night-train to Scotland to see assistant manager of East Fife Football Club David Gorman, so Dave Gorman could prove to Danny Wallace there were other Dave Gormans--and thereby win a drinker's bet. Such was the buzz Dave Gorman got from meeting Dave Gorman, he then went on a half year schlep around the world seeking out yet more Dave Gormans: in Ireland, Israel, Norway, America, with a sarcastically derisive Danny Wallace in constant and niggling attendance.

Things that work on TV--or start as drunken bets--don't always make the most successful of books and there are times when Are You Dave Gorman? seems a little contrived, not to say fatuously pointless. But such is the charm, candour, and wit of the two writers' alternating voices, any qualms come to seem churlish, if not thick-headed: it's the very frivolousness and absurdity of Are You Dave Gorman? that makes it so boyishly likeable. --Sean Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you Dave Gorman?, 8 Jul 2005

This review is from: Are You Dave Gorman? (Paperback)
No but I sure wish I was after reading this book! The insane wacky recklessness of these two friends is contagious! It made me want to wake up and challenge myself to do something crazy and time consuming - resulting in travelling round the world and forcing complete strangers to help me complete my quest! The book is about how a drunken bet gets out of control and consumes their lifes - its a factual story that is humorously written between both dave and danny in two different fonts. The style of writing is hilarious as are the situations described. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried, I learned new Norwegian phrases!, 10 Sep 2001

If you liked the TV show, you'll love this. If you liked the stage show, you'll love this. If you like travel books or humorous tales, I think you'll love this. If your name is Dave Gorman, you've probably bought it already! Very funny, well written and surprisingly touching, especially in exploring the relationships between Dave and Danny and also Danny and his Norwegian girlfriend Hanne. A must-read - I couldn't put it down.

Are you Dave Gorman? No, but I wish I was! June 5, 2005
The funniest book I have ever read... and I don't bestow that title lightly!

This two-man tale of namesake lunacy is guaranteed to make anyone laugh out loud. Repeatedly!

It all started with Dave Gorman betting his flatmate, Danny Wallace "That there must be loads of Dave Gormans out there", while drunk... Danny wakes up a few hours later and finds he's on a train to Scotland to meet one of them.

To cut a long story short this starts a round the world trip to meet 54 other Dave Gormans. Dave and Danny resort to desperate measures and trickery (Guess what Danny? That man over there just happens to be a Dave Gorman!) to complete the task... but do they do it? Ahh that would be telling! You've have to read this to find out.

Aside from being a story about Dave Gormen (Dave invented the plural) this is also a touching tale of friendship between the two man. But above all this a story of English eccentricity... I think that only two tea-obsessed Englishmen would do something quite this bizarre!

It is told from the point of view of both Dave and Danny... and it works very well. On one hand you have the slightly manic tone of Dave, a man on a mission, while balancing it out is the considerably more depressed tone of Danny, who can't believe what he's been sucked into... but doesn't want to loose the bet with Dave.

This book should be essential reading for everyone... even if you can't answer "Yes" to that immortal question... Are You Dave Gorman?
