Amazon.co.uk Review

Cybill Shepherd has always been that unique form of celebrity, combining the very best virtues of Hollywood glamour with the sexy down-to-earth appeal of a woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. Cybill Disobedience charts the life and times of the actress, best known for her role as Maddy in the hit 80s show "Moonlighting" and for parts in Taxi Driver and the Last Picture Show. She has since gone on to find fame as the star of her own sitcom but in Hollywood circles, it seems, the rumour mill cared less about her activity on screen and more about her life behind the bedroom doors. Along with several failed relationships she has had run-ins with some of the Tinseltown's most admired men, and tales such as the night Elvis took her and a friend to the movies are recounted with wit and humour. The book really gets into its stride when Cybill dishes the dirt on her two most popular vehicles and there are some genuinely frank and surprising revelations to be found here. The bitchiness and backstabbing of TV executives, rival stars and script writers are all laid bare here though Cybill never pretends it all went on around her. She did, on more than one occasion, wade into the thick with all cannons blazing, though it usually ended up with another exec or star hating her. The rivalry with her "Cybill" co-star Christine Baranksi makes for particularly bitchy reading, though Cybill is careful not to actually attack her in print, instead ridiculing the press speculation that she tried to steal Christine's best jokes, or more often than not, just the show. It's an affectionate and honest story of Hollywood success and Cybill's wry and witty voice shines through. She has genuinely laid herself out in the open and you can't help but feel attracted to her somewhat self-imposed vulnerabilty. Open, honest and immensely readable, Cybill Disobedience is as sassy and sexy as its subject matter. --Jon Weir --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

If you only ever buy one Hollywood autobiography make it this one. Sassy, shocking, funny and totally revealing this is Cybill Shepherd's unexpurgated life-story, told with the wit and honesty you'd expect from the star that's seen it all and knows it all. She has been 57 kinds of disobedient and she has never held back from doing or saying what she wants. Cybill Disobedience is a limit-breaking, open-top car ride down Hollywood's Hall of Fame. From top model to movie siren, sex with Elvis to Bruce Willis's appeal, The Last Picture Show to Taxi Driver, the Cybill disaster and the Moonlighting phenomenon, it's all in here; every boyfriend, every affair, every good film and bad film. But most of all it's about a strong woman's determination to survive. The whole shebang - from Hollywood's mouthiest queen.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a naughty girl you are, 9 Feb 2004

Cybill Shepherd is not the greatest actress in the world and when seen on TV chat shows can be a tad annoying but her book is great. She is really honest about herself and her circumstances. She tells it like it is. She is a tough woman in a tough world.

She does, however, seem to be quite friendless, doesn't seem to see eye to eye with anyone she works with and has ended up with a career which is not quite as good as it could have been. In this tome, she doesn't dwell on her bad marriages, however, she does talk in some depth about her affair with Peter Dogbanovich (read the book to get the joke!). She also talks about a short fling with Elvis in quite grafic terms, which are also funny and about Charles Grodin's wig (really, I hadn't noticed!!). She also goes on a bit about her singing (so that's what you call it).

She sounds like someone you could have as a friend, but only for a short time - does she get on with anyone?

However, if Cybill has been a man in the world of showbiz she would be seen an determined and ruthless but because she's a woman (and quite an attractive one at that), she's a bitch. But I think that's a well-earned reputation.

However, this is one bio that does make you laugh out loud and really spills the beans - Ann-Margret take note.

5.0 out of 5 stars Once I started reading, I could not put this down...., 13 Aug 2002
It didn't take me very long to read this, it was hardly out of my hand from the first time I picked it up. So unashamedly honest, hilarious sometimes but painfully sad at other times, it was written with such brutal honesty that I cannot help but admire Cybill for all she has been through in her life.

Her comments about Bruce Willis (worth a read for any Moonlighting fan) had me in stitches - she certainly doesn't mince her words.

An excellent book, worth a read even if you have never seen Moonlighting or any of Cybill's other work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sassy Cybill, 4 Oct 2004
By A Customer
Cybill Disobedience is a searingly honest tell-all book about Cybill Shepherd and the famous people who have been in her life. Cybill has been part of classic TV shows like Moonlighting and classic movies like Taxi Driver and there is a lot of fascinating insight into the TV/film industry as well as some on-set trashy gossip.

Cybill seems to have a reputation and hard to work with but it's the old double standard - if she was a man who fought hard to do things on her 'Cybill' sitcom to get it right, she would have been admired and probably listened to.

I don't doubt for a second that Cybill is frank and honest and maybe some people found that 'difficult' but even though she talks about many famous people and difficulties in relationships on-set and off, the person who she is hardest on in this book is herself.

It is a great book, painfully honest for a celebrity and definitely worth reading about Cybill and her life (so far)
