Review
'A must for Roses fans and musos alike.', The Big Issue

Product Description
The Stone Roses single-handedly set the blueprint for the resurgence of UK rock n roll in the 1990s: Ian Brown's new lazy-style vocals, Reni's fluid, flunk-tinged, ground-breaking drumming, the guitar genius of John Squire. Combine all this with the fact that this band were from Manchester, wore flared trousers and football tops, a whole new baggy style that had never been south of Stoke before - and you've got one of the few bands who could ever truly deserve to be called Great. Their LP The Stone Roses is acknowledged as one of the most important albums of all time. But the Roses are by no means resigned to musical history. Ian Brown, a solo artist and star in his own right continues to reach his fans with his inimitable style and knack of tapping into musical trends. This is a fully revised and updated biography.

3.0 out of 5 stars It is okay, 24 Jul 2005

I had this for a while before reading it and yes, it tells the story of The Stone Roses who I love but it just isn't very well written. There is poor grammar and repetition throughout and the later period isn't dealt with in any great depth.

The book looks great but I felt "Was that it?" after I finished reading it but if you want the best book about The Stone Roses then I have a feeling this is the book that you should get.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Stone Roses: And the Resurrection of British Pop, 13 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Jonn Robb writes with a very colloquial style in this book. The style does the job well - it's easy and readable and shows enthusiasm for the Band. While there are many grammatical errors and faults it's perfectly written for a music biography.

The book tells the Roses story year by year. We get a lot of detail from the early years and about the exploits of the young Roses as they form the punk band English Rose, and form scooter gangs in urban Manchester. The Roses years are told in an enthusiastic way with many opinions and memories from various wide eyed fans. The descriptions of the gigs and records sound exciting and go some way to showing what it must have been really like to be there as a diehard Roses fan. The "lost years" as the band record the "Second Coming" sound just as banal as those years must have been.

There are no interviews with the Roses theirselves in this book, except quotes from old music press interviews. This means that this is a good book from a fans point of view. This is the key - it's written by a fan for Roses fans, but there's also no real revelations or shock. Any Roses fan will know most of this already. I am certain that there are many shocking and unbelievable stories that remain untold about the Roses (especially about their lost years). But until Mani writes his own version of events (as I'm sure he will in 15 years time when Primal Scream retire) we will never know. I wasn't expecting a book full of revelation, I expected a good read about the Roses story. This is exactly what I got and this book is a very good read indeed. This is easily the best Stone Roses biography available. A good book about a great band.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read, 17 Nov 2001
By A Customer
my mates have been raving about this book for years, and since its a reprint I thought it was time I got hold of a copy myself. Im glad I did, this book has it all, its written from the inside, its funny and its interesting and it totally tells the story of the Roses in incredable detail from the their punk rock youth to their rise to the top. it captures manchester of the time better than any other book i have read on the subject and is amust for anybody interested in rock n roll manchester music and a genration growing up from punk into acid house and baggy and interested in the Roses making that amazing album...
