Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

On occasions I felt some people were reluctant to contradict Michael as they seemed scared of upsetting him and of him leaving the team. I have to say that taking life by the balls is not a great strength of all Europeans. When balls where given out in Ireland and England, they seem to have run out further south in Europe.
International playboy, unreconstructed womaniser, a party animal prowling the champagne circuit of the Formula 1 year, Eddie Irvine has brought much-needed thunder and flash to a sport which has struggled under the yoke of dour, monochrome characters like Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher for so long.

>From obscurity to within a whisker of the Drivers Championship in four years at Ferrari, the world's most glamorous and enigmatic team, Irvine's rise to stardom has been meteoric, and when the Northern Irish maverick joins Jaguar on January 1, 2000, the Millennium will be ushering in the most exciting Grand Prix season in living memory.

In his own words, and in interviews with his friends, family and teammates, Irvine and writer Jane Nottage reveal the man behind the myth, treating us to the exclusive inside line on the 1999 season, Ferrari, Schumacher and the glitterdust that trails in the wake of one of the most glamorous sports in the world.

Always outspoken, often outrageous, Irvine is a cavalier in a sport where team politics and sponsor duties have made mumbling Roundheads of so many of his fellow drivers--this is seat of the pants ride through a life lived in the fast lane. --Alex Hankin

never before have I read such an open an honest book in the world of a sportsman. Open admision to both sporting and personal mistakes as well as full on enjoyment of the highs. If you like F1 you will find this an interesting read into the life of a driver and a team, if you like Eddie Irvine you will not be able to put this book down, some golden moments in the book, these hit you with perfect presentation and timing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A contradiction of a book! Not unlike Eddie!, 14 Jan 2000
By A Customer
I was dizzy by chapter 2 - this book does not flow in the usual manner of (auto)biographys, but then Eddie is not a usual person by a long shot!! Jumping from serious F1 related matters to "Girls, Girls, Girls" in a matter of sentences demonstrates how strange this guys life must really be. The optimistic F1 driver, mingled with effrots as a father-figure; a dash of the perfect boyfriend bounced around with being one of the lads; and all this topped off with an incredible fortune and a character that you cannot dislike no matter how hard you try!! Eddie Irvine is the equivalent of a straight banana, unusual, fascinating, aggravating, and very amusing and this book describes him perfectly. I had to finish it in a couple of days as the suspense was amazing; quite what for, I haven't found out yet - but I guess that's Eddie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and revealing portrait., 11 Jan 2000
I have just received "Life in the Fast Lane" and find it fascinating. I have circa 300 books on motor racing, a fair proportion of them are driver biographies/autobiographies. For a book to impress me, it must either give new insights/ information on a given subject or where it is a driver biography, it must really delve into the drivers personality, show what makes him/made him tick. Gerald Donaldson's books on Gilles Villeneuve and James Hunt did this. Eddie's book does this too. If you're interested in statistics, don't read it but if you want know about the contradiction that is Eddie Irvine the man, I cant recommend it highly enough.
