I work as a decorative painter and have a keen interest in the historical side of decorative techniques, I also teach the subject to adults. This book takes a different approach to most other books I have read on the subject of decorative painting, particularly in the way Kevin McCloud puts the techniques used into a cultural and historic context. It is aimed at people with a good depth of knowledge in this field: semi-professionals, teachers of the subject and working artists. Kevin McCloud divulges a lot of detail and assumes a good level of expertise, aswell as personal access to materials, brushes and products.

This is not to say that a beginner would not gain anything from reading this book; far from it, it is a very good read. The book is well thought out, the text is clear and the photographs sharp, colourful and informative. An essential manual for anyone seriously interested in the subject.
