This is a superb volume for anyone interested in learning about the wide ranging and fascinating world of opera. It covers hundreds of operas right up to the modern day, all in immense detail,with synopsis of the plots, performance history, some pertinent personal judgements on the quality of the opera or the opera's standing in the context of the complete repetoir of a particular composer. Particularly interesting is the notes on the most important opera composers.

Of course, it does not cover all the operas ever made, but (as it is flaunted in the into) it does cover operas you are most likely to come across as well as almost all the operas of the most famous composers: ie. Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Wagner and Rossini etc.
It even gives you an accurate running time for each opera and premiere dates and even musical excerpts and photos from famous productions. The language and sophistication is top-notch and the opinions expressed are most definitely agreeable.
This book kept me busy and it will continue to interest and inspire as you get to know more and more operas.
BUY IT-it's a must for any opera buff.

Since we got digital TV we are enjoying some superb opera on TV. The synopses and information in Kobbe are as good as having a programme at the theatre, without paying �5 every time!
