Product Description

Planning a Baby? is all about giving your baby the best possible start in life. By taking maximum care of your health in the six important months before your new child is even conceived, you can optimise the chances of having a healthy baby. The first few weeks of gestation are critical. Research has shown that undernourishment during this time - often before the mother is even aware she is pregnant - can affect the baby a long way into the future. It is linked with the subsequent development of heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes in middle age. In this completely updated and revised edition, Dr Sarah Brewer provides the latest groundbreaking research and gives advice on: -Contraceptive advances, -Lifestyle and factors that affect early pregnancy, -Conception itself - the myths and the facts, -Which vitamins and minerals are needed, including the use of folic acid, -Advice for vegetarians, -Sperm health, -An overview of the causes of miscarriage, This book aims to give potential parents all the tools they require before embarking on one of life's greatest adventures - conception, pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overly scientific but very thorough, 24 May 2002
By A Customer
I bought this book when I first started thinking about having a baby. I read it cover to cover in a day, which was very heavy going even for an avid bookworm. Although the book is very comprehensive - especially when it comes to diet - I found it was far too scientific (and I have an honours degree in biology!). All in all it's full of useful information but I think the basic messages of "eat healthily and look after yourself" are lost in the detail. The sections explaining the reproductive cycle and contraception were excellent, though, and if you want to read every book available before conception, it's probably worth it. Just as long as you don't get too bogged down in detail...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not helpful if you are finding it hard to get pregnant, 22 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This book seemed detailed and helpful when I first read it. It contains lots of information about the mechanics of getting pregnant and recommendations for preparing your own and your partner's bodies in order to give your baby the best possible start in life.
However, the index is very limited and makes it hard to find answers to occasional specific question you might have. It also offers almost no information at all to help you if you find that it is taking you more than a few months to get pregnant.
I'd suggest borrowing this from your library and saving your dosh for all those folic acid supplements you'll be buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting if slightly complicated read..., 18 Feb 2005
By A Customer
I found this book an interesting first step to take when planning for a baby. She uses the full biological names of EVERYTHING which doesn't make the book the easiest I have ever read but I did find it interesting. There is a massive section on supplementation which I largely followed and some interesting information you can show your man on what might be affecting his fertility (alcohol, caffeine, underpants etc!) I did get pregnant a few months after reading the book but unfortunately miscarried at nine weeks. Nine months on, I'm still trying. Perhaps not a miracle cure for infertility then although, to be fair, she doesn't claim it is...
