Product Description

Product Description

Living in a barn requires a sense of adventure, but once experienced it becomes an addictive way of life, according to the owners of some of these converted barns. Now, in place of cows, horses, fodder or hops, the new occupants of the barns are people who have painstakingly restored a valuable part of the British countryside. Many are artists or architects whose imaginations have been challenged by the potential of a medieval monastic barn, Palladian stable block or towering hopkiln. 24 barns are featured, accompanied by colour photographs showing both the exteriors and interiors, and all were once empty, threatened or derelict. Salvaged by imaginative conversions that respect their agricultural past and dominant architectural features, the barns have been transformed into a variety of comfortable and surprisingly practical homes. Kate Corbett-Winder is the author of "Vogue More Cash than Dash", "Vogue Even More Dash Than Cash" and "Laura Ashley Living Rooms".

5.0 out of 5 stars Barn Stormin'!, 12 Mar 2003
By Debbie Standaloft (Auzances, Limousin France) - See all my reviews
Having recently bought barn myself, this book attracted my attention immediately with it's stunning front cover. The inside was no disapointment either.
Featuring 24 different styles of barns there is something to inspire, whatever the size and shape of your own property. There is a tendency for some of the designers to go for traditional country cottage looks complete with drying flowers hanging in he kitchen but this shouldn't put you off. Look beyond the unimaginative "kitch" to the architecture and this book is all you need to get you headed off to the sketch book.
There is a hint that at least a few of the owners have had access to unlimited budgets for architecture, furniture and fittings. However, with the time and determination the same results can be acheived on a more modest budget.
This is definately not a builders guide but there are some useful tips about planning and funding from the personal experience of the owners.
With something for all styles, tastes and sizes, if you're doing a barn conversion, this book is a must.
