Sunday Times, April 20, 2003

Exquisitely expressive, crams loneliness, rejection, playfullness and reunion into words and pictures that combine idiosyncratic modernity with retro charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Firm Bedtime Favourite, 7 Jan 2005
By A. Weston "Adrian Weston" (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews

My 3 year-old demands Beegu at bedtime most nights. It's a simple and heartwarming story, but what makes it stand out is the superb quality of the illustration. The subdued palette and the deft drawing is far superior to the run-of-the-mill children's book artwork. I also love the way Beegu is ignored, overlooked, rejected by all the adults - appealing to a child's sense that only the small people can see and appreciate the otherworldly. I think Beegu's experience stranded on earth shows rather nicely what the knee-high view of what urban life must be like for toddlers: a see of hostile ankles and briefcases and no room to move.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!, 9 Jan 2004
By Danielle Hall - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This book is almost as good as Alexis Deacon's first book Slow Loris (which IS perfect). Beegu is a lovely character who young children find appealing, yet the author manages not to fall into the trap of being too cutesy. A refreshing new look for children's picture books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Little Book, 10 Nov 2003
By A. Weston "Adrian Weston" (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Beegu is a delight, and really brings home the fact that the read-aloud/early years sector in children's publishing has been languishing rather of late. There need to be more books like Beegu published. The illustrations are gorgeous, the story simple, clear, touching and humorous. A truly lovely offering.
