Amazon.co.uk Review

Perhaps your child is drawn to the written word like fog to the sea. (Lucky you!) More likely he or she prefers cartoons to Kipling. This well-chosen, irresistibly illustrated collection is sure to coax your wayward bibliophile away from the telly and into the world of reading.

Designed to grow with your youngster, The Hutchinson Treasury of Children's Poetry begins with a selection of best-loved nursery rhymes, then advances to action poems and increasingly complex works by such literary giants as Ted Hughes, Robert Louis Stevenson and Seamus Heaney. They'll relish, for instance, the wacky Roy Fuller's "Horrible Things":

"What's the horriblest thing you've seen?"
Said Nell to Jean.
"Some grey-coloured, trodden on plasticine;
On a plate, a left-over cold baked bean;
A cloak-room ticket numbered thirteen;
A slice of meat without any lean..."
The final section introduces young ones to the classics, including poems by Shelley, Yeats and Coleridge. Not only will your children delight in these time-honoured favourites, they'll be well- acquainted, when exam time comes around, with the statue of Ozymandias, the lake at Innisfree, and the wonders of Kubla Khan.

It's no easy task luring a child away from videos and computer games. Make your job easier with a book that truly is a treasure. --Martha Silano

Product Description

-An Anthology of poems for the whole family to treasure This unforgettable treasury brings together over three hundred of the best loved poems to open the door of the imagination and take children on a unique journey exploring the fun and wonder of rhyme and verse. Designed to grow with your child, the book begins with traditional nursery rhymes, action poems, and young verse by such favourites as Eleanor Farjeon and Shirley Hughes; continues in complexity featuring the work of Roger McGough, Michael Rosen, Ted Hughes, Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling and Christina Rossetti, among others. You can eavesdrop on Lewis Carroll's bizarre conversation between a walrus and a carpenter, revel in the exploits of T. S. Eliot's mystery cat and delight in the confrontation between Roald Dahl's wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. You will see how Edward Lear and Michael Palin can make you laugh in just a few lines and how longer poems like Robert Browning's The Pied Piper of Hamlyn can tell a story. Illustrations by Quentin Blake, Angela Barrett, Satoshi Kitamura and Tony Ross rest beautifully alongside the work of classic chldren's illustrators such as Kate Greenaway, Arthur Rackham and Jessie Wilcox Smith. This Treasury is for the whole family to share and will last throughout childhood - and beyond.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well presented book with a range of poetry for all tastes, 16 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This book is a brilliant anthology of poetry: from classics like Auden's "Night Mail" to modern Michael Rosen, it is great to dip in and out of. Beautifully illustrated I challenge anyone not to find something in it which appeals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding collection that grows with your child, 16 Feb 2007
We have had this Treasury (and a treasury it is!) for many years now and it continues to be a favourite of our two children. The range of poems is wonderful, from nursery rhymes to poems "For older children" and an excellent selection of classics.

The children read it for pleasure and have used it on countless occasions for homework. They have discovered and continue to discover new wonders every time as well as returning to old favourites. The joy of it lies in the variety and the way in which no one age or medium is presented at the cost of another.

I would recommend this book without hesitation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really lovely book, 30 Aug 2005
This is a beautifully illustrated book of well selected poetry. Loving poetry myself, as a child, I was so pleased to find this book. The illustrations are varied - from Quentin Blake to Kate Greenaway - both colour and black and white. If you're looking for an anthology for a child, look no further!
