2.0 out of 5 stars Details? Where are they...Read before you buy!, 29 Jan 1999
By A Customer
C++ gives you enough rope to hang yourself many times over, this book lengthens the rope... If you want to learn how to use MFC, if you'd like to get a reasonably quick start to using visual C++ 6.0, and make some simple applications and not fully understand C++ or Windows programming buy it! If you'd like to understand what is going on, how to develop your skills and actually write some decent code for Windows, buy something else!

The C++ section is not fully ANSI, and the notion that an inexperienced programmer could have got to grips with anything other than just the Visual C++6 IDE is not true. OK for low level general stuff, but personally I'd learn C++ from something else. I admit that the fundamental code for C++ is there, but fundamental principles must come in Volume 2.

Sadly, this book is far from being a complete reference on anything, dont be taken in the title. If you are new to C++ or want a complete reference, check out Herbert Schildt. If you know of a good, descriptive book on how to create, control and manipulate in Windows 95/98 or NT...let me know!

2.0 out of 5 stars Title questionable, has 107 C programs and 98 C++ programs, 13 May 1999
By A Customer
Amazing that the writers could not break lose from C programming. Unfortunately they did present most of their examples in the C-language. I counted all C and C++ programs. Easy to see what is C, having C filename extension and stdio header files while C++ programs having CPP filename extension and mostly iostream, or other stream related header files.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very thin about Visual C++, 14 April 1999
By A Customer
I didn't read C/C++ stuff, but a coverage of Visual C++ is not enough even for a beginner's reference. The word 'Complete' I can't even discuss. Even books like 'VC in 24 hours' may give you more ideas and examples than this one.
