Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

This weighty volume is packed with all the details you need to produce effective real world applets and applications in Visual J++. Written for the seasoned professional, this is a no-frills guide that goes as deep into the subject as you want to go, from the fundamentals of Java, through multi-threading, manipulation of the core frameworks and GUI building, right up to programming entire databases in Java.

The book gets right into the heart (and code) of the matter in a way that will leave non-programmers bewildered. Professional developers however, will love the lack of fluff and non-relevant information that often pads out programming guides such as this. The format is subject-orientated with each chapter describing a particular programming technique or API and the how, why and where of programming in Visual J++. There are no set "tasks" to complete and the author makes it quite clear that you will most certainly not learn it in 24 hours.

The book also shows you how to integrate your Java code using Microsoft's extensions to the language and platform, such as Active X, OLE DB, COM/DCOM, WFC Components and WFC component model.

Product Description

3.0 out of 5 stars Good overview but too many errata and too many pages, 29 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Good as an introduction, but as its supposed to end up with readers professional programmers, there ought to be more information than is actually contained in its 800 pages (although his style makes it easy reading). Some of the errors are astounding - not just errors in the code listing, but a fundamental error in the COM section. There's also one part where he refers to another chapter for details on painting and graphics in WFC, but that chapter doesn't exist! (I guess this got missed in the '99 revision of the book) The author is a professional lecturer - overall my impression is of great lecture talks put down into a book without a great deal of proof-reading or any serious technical QA. The positive side of it is that you feel you have a good enough overview to read the online documentation /references.

By A Customer
If this book does one thing perfectly....It explains things VERY CLEARLY. It never glosses over important sub-issues and it is the first book I reach for when I am expolring a new part of Java. The author lays everything out clearly and concisely.

Advised recommendations. I understood a lot of WFC and JDirect thanks to that book. It also explains very well what java is and how to program with it.
