5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book to further C++ understanding, 18 May 1999
By A Customer
This book really cleared up a lot of points regarding many aspects of C and C++ for me. As a new convert to programming, I have found that online tutorials concentrate either on OOP alone (e.g classes, pointers, inheritance) or jump into advanced programming, and there is a huge void in the middle regarding subjects such as file management, C & C++ libraries and templates. This book may be a reference, but it still taught me more about C++ than any so called primer I have read. I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone, but particularly to people like myself who have read a few introductory texts but need to fill in the gaps. I am sure it equally applies to more experienced programmers who need a reasonably detailed referenced. Even away from the computer, it was easy to follow, and despite it's size, I read it comfortably over a few days. I really should get out more!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars far too basic for a complete reference, 11 Sep 2001
By A Customer
For a beginner and moderately knowledgeable user of C++ I would rate this book quite highly; it is verbose and is usually clear on what it is addressing. For those I would rate it 4 stars.

As an advanced user I have found time and again that it fails to answer any of my questions at the edge of the language; pushing templates and rtti. It also offers a few pearls of wisdom that are odds to those in other books; something which makes me feel unsafe with some other recommendations put forward. I can not recommend it strongly to advanced users, hence giving it 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book ever written on C++; it covers everything!, 31 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book is definitely the best book I've ever read about C++. You can be a beginner or an advanced user - this book will surely learn you something. The book is written in Herbert Schildt's own style, and not difficult to understand at all. It covers the latest release of ANSI Standard C++; including namespaces, templates, exception handling, dynamic casting operators, RTTI and STL. If you want to know C++, and don't want to buy any other books, buy this one! When I read it, I thought; "Finally a book that really covers ALL of C++, not just some of it!" Thank you, thank you, Herb, for giving us the best book avaible on the best programming language avaible!!!!
