Product Description

Product Description
Designed to teach readers how to program C++, this text presents examples of source code and shows the results that each code produces. The book encourages experimentation with the code presented to gain firsthand experience. C++ is the current state-of-the-art as applied to computer programming languages and is the choice of professional programmers worldwide. C++ combines power with flexibility, efficiency with elegance and tradition with innovation. Each element of C++ has real purpose and very few redundant features exist. The book covers the basics through to advanced topics and provides numerous examples to aid the learning process. Although the overall structure of the book remains the same (tutorial in nature), there are updates and changes to nearly every page, plus two additional chapters on the Standard Template Library (STL) and Run-Time Type ID (FTTI), as well as many other smaller language modifications. Herbert Schildt is the author of "C: The Complete Reference", "Teach Yourself C++" and "C++: The Complete Reference".

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand , but missing critical information, 21 Jan 1999
By A Customer
I found "C++ From the Ground Up" easy to read and understand. Big problem with compiling the source code as written however. It's nice that Mr Schildt wrote everything in compliance with the ANSI spec. I would expect that of a member. It would have been nice of him, however, to include directions on how to compile the samples with compilers that are not yet completely compliant. Especially since this is a book for BEGINNERS. It took me hours sometimes to find the correct header file, or realize that one of the keywords used in the book is not supported by my compiler. Buyers beware! I tried two different compilers, neither very old, and neither supported what Mr Schildt says is "ANSI C++."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginner level, 1 May 2006

A good book to begin with. Easy to read with short code samples to demonstrate concepts, well structured and understandable. A gentle introduction. If the edition I read had not completely neglected initialisation lists, which should certainly be included in a beginner-to-intermediate book, I would have given it 5 stars. Also it does not go deep inside virtual functions, but this is reasonable for the level it addresses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's book, 23 April 2001
By A Customer
I felt very comfortable reading this book because it has many examples and emphasises how C++ is different now to how it used to be. It is very readable. I know Basic and so I already know what a 'for loop' is, etc.. But, even if I did not already have a programming background, I feel sure that I would fly through the book.

Mike
