Product Description

Product Description
This text provides a mastery learning approach to C++, including objectives, minimal discussion and examples. It also gives readers the opportunity to test their understanding with multiple exercises. Readers can test their knowledge of individual concepts, and then test their comprehension of the topic in a larger setting. This edition contains updates and changes to nearly all areas of the book. Two new chapters have been added to cover the Standard Template Library (STL) and the Run-Time Type ID (RTTI). It contains material on programming for Windows. The Windows environment offers some challenges for the C++ programmer and these are explained in the book. The "Teach Yourself" series uses the following formula to ensure a reader's comprehension: chapter objectives which highlight topics to be covered in each chapter; concrete examples of concepts; exercises based on real-life programming situations; keyword lists in every chapter; and mastery-skills check to ensure a reader's comprehension before moving on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short examples to the point, 16 Mar 1999
By A Customer
What can I say about this book? Some books have long examples so the author can show off how good he/she is at programming but the examples in this book are short, clear and to the point. Once I started going though the book I couldn't stop! What I need now is to figure out how to structure everything to write my own software.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague!, 28 Feb 2004
By Johnny (London) - See all my reviews
My title for the review may seem a little harsh and indeed, 5 years ago I would have given this book 5 stars. It is the book I learned C++ from. I always find Herbert Schildt's books very easy to read and have not seen any other author present questions in a well structured manner. More importantly he provides answers which very few authors seem to do. So why only 1 star? Well I was really disappointed to find that comp.lang.c++.* and 'Association of C and C++ users' give terrible reviews of H. schildt books more than any other author. They have even specifically posted a note of caution about his books alone on the C++ faq web site (search for faq comp lang learn C++ on google - can't post a URL). I suppose that his books get 5 stars on amazon is due to the fact that people learn C++ quickly from reading his book (like I did), and have justifiably assumed that the information is correct!! Pity :-(
