5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect thought-provoking material going into a new year, 27 Dec 2003
I received a copy of Johns Lee’s book as a present – and having now read it, I think it would be a great gift to anyone considering their future career as we enter a new year. This book covers every base – no stone is left unturned in helping people think creatively about how to get their career moving. It’s not just about getting the Perfect promotion, but, perhaps more importantly, about getting a more fulfilling role with a current employer, rather than, what is all too tempting, thinking about jumping ship with sometimes unpredictable results.

What I also like about this book is that should give people the tools to deal with what is probably the second most emotional think in their life in a rational way. This means they are more likely to be successful by doing something positive, rather than simply worrying about things in a possibly self-destructive way.

Overall, I think this is a great self-help book – I wish it had been written earlier in my career, when I might have been in a better position to take some of its wisdom to heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars For you to manage your career and for the Executive Coach, 23 Dec 2003
By Peter Kent (Lymm, Cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
John Lees has followed up his excellent “How To Get A Job You’ll Love” a search for the ideal with this potentially more materialistic title. With its research base he builds on the answers to questions he posed to a variety of high performers. This leads to a rich mixture of advice lists and self-analysis tools. These move the reader on to indicating action he or she can take to get that promotion. John helps address the question,” Promotion for what?” in his chapter, “What do you mean by success?”

If managing your career, rather than just having a career is what you want this book is for you. There are some great questions to work through on your own; as an Executive Coach, I find there are some really useful ‘tools’ to help clients wanting to manage their careers, without necessarily moving to another organisation.

For those ready to find and climb further rungs on their ladder this is a great book to discover new ways of climbing it. For the Coach there are some useful tools, particularly if you turn some of the good advice into good questions.
