Product Description

Book Jacket
Begg, Fischer and Dornbusch's Economics has shaped introductory economics teaching for a decade and a half with its judicious, even-handed approach, clear but entertaining exposition and impressive array of the latest data and policy applications. Don't make the millennium a lottery--buy the book that students have come to rely upon.

New Features of the Fifth Edition:
* Essential infrastructure for effective markets--Western lessons from Eastern Europe
* open- economy microeconomics: the new economic geography, migration, locational competition and the subsidiarity principle
* Dead or hibernating? The outlook for inflation and new approaches to inflation control
* European integration: progress, pitfalls and how to keep score

All backed up by a host of exciting new boxes to bring economics alive and a completely new Instructor's Manual with David Begg's "top tips for teaching".

About the Authors
David Begg is Professor of Economics at Birkbeck College, London. Stanley Fischer and Rudiger Dornbusch are Professors of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The authors are leading researchers and have international reputations as teachers and writers. All three have extensive experience in advising business and government.

From the Publisher
Begg: The Classic Economics Textbook
As the publisher, we take constructive criticism of our books seriously. That is why the "student" from London has made comments which should be disregarded, as subjective, ill-informed nonesense. BBC Radio 4 recently surveyed the opinions of academics and students, around the UK, to find out which book is the "classic" UK economics textbook. The BBC is to broadcast a series of 6 programmes dedicated to classic books, to be aired in September 1999, in which economics will feature as one programme in the series. It is not a surprise to anyone therefore, that the answer they came up with was Begg, Economics. It has sold 500,000 copies over the last 20 years, and has educated and equipped thousands of economists and non-economists well, with its clear, incisive instruction and direct, unwordy approach. David Begg is a distinguished economist, whose teaching style pervades the text. Accompanying the text is a student work book, and and for the instructor an excellent test bank and instructor's guide. I would suggest that anyone seriously contemplating the study of economics, without a copy of Begg by their side, is ill-equipped to the task - I used it as a student 10 years ago, it was good then, it's even better now. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent book to depend, 6 Jul 2000
By A Customer
it is a very excellent book to depend on the final days of examination, it is very good to throw in the dust bin after you use it and found that it is useless.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't Write Off Begg, 7 April 1999
By A Customer
I agree largely with the frustrated student from London but though Begg is basic and should never be used by itself, it does provide simple and easy to understand explanations of some very complex topics. This does make it a drag to read if you are looking for more depth but it remains ideal for those who want a basic understanding or for those who find it easier to get a basic picture from which they can then progress.
