From the Back Cover
Software System Development: A Gentle Introduction, Second Edition, follows the development of a system from the client's initial vague specification, through a series of transitional stages, to the completed software product. It includes new chapters on requirements engineering and object-oriented development, together with a substantially increased set of exercises on modelling techniques. Written in a clear, friENDly style, this book is aimed at first-and second-year computer science undergraduates, in areas such as computer science, information systems or business studies, who are studying systems analysis or software engineering. It will also appeal to computer professionals and anyone who has an interest in the system development process: Special features include: Written in a clear, friENDly style that appeals to non-specialists as well as to computer professionals; A toolbox approach is adopted, rather than a rigid methodology; Provides a simple example of the step-by-step development of a small case study and a widely accepted set of modelling techniques; It is packed full of examples and exercises to aid the learning process.

4.0 out of 5 stars A refeshing and excellent book., 11 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Books on computing are often nasty, brutish and over long. To paraphrase Frank Zappa: written by people who can't write for people who can't read. There's a psychological case study to be done as to why they are often so garishly coloured (the colours of wasps and venomous creatures being particularly popular). There's an economic case study to be done as to why they are often so expensive (particularly in relation to European and American prices!). And, with respect to system development and design, there's an educational case study to be done about whether many of them have serious content at all or whether the content is the same size as the book. This book is the best I know of. Its relatively cheap, completely non-pompous, well-written (whatever that means) and accessible. The authors are non-patronising, get to the point, give me the facts, get them largely right, then make their excuses and leave. I like it.
