From the Publisher
The anthology contains articles about Western culture as well as non-Western culture. At least one selection in each chapter relates to contemporary North America so that students can more easily compare familiar religious beliefs with others outside their culture.
The anthology includes a balance of classic and contemporary articles, traditional and non-traditional topics. In addition to classic selections by Clifford Geertz, Victor Turner, Claude Lèvi-Strauss, Bronislaw Malinowski, and Anthony F. C. Wallace, the reader includes current anthropological views on such intriguing subjects as wicca, divination, ethnopsychiatry, the occult, and the religious use of drugs.
The articles are not only accessible to students with no previous exposure to anthropology, but they also encourage further thought. As one reviewer said, "This collection does what every good text must do: it informs questions of substance on the topics addressed in a way that inspires higher level thought in general."
The authors have provided abundant student aids. Included are extensive chapter overviews, insightful headnotes for each article, a comprehensive glossary of difficult terms, an extensive index of subjects, authors, and titles, a frontispiece map showing the location of peoples discussed in the book, and a complete bibliography.
Ten new articles have been added. Based on valuable feedback from the current users and reviewers of this popular anthology, new articles have been added that include topics of interest to students such as wicca, the Heaven's Gate cult, the Ghost Dance, peyotism, and Rasta.
More classic articles have been included, with new additions by Clifford Geertz, Edmund Leach, Victor Turner, J. S. Slotkin, and E.E. Evans-Pritchard. Of the 56 total articles, 21 can be considered "classics."
