This book has been the course material for a diploma I am doing, and as a programmer by trade i've seen many technical books. This is not a book to be used as a reference, but rather an excellent way to learn solid fundamentals of the programming language. It kept me interested from start to finish, firstly by not being intimidating before you have a grounding, and secondly by providing the most amount of hands on work in a text book I have seen. Expect to have written many programs by the end of it, ranging from single form programs to nifty desktop applications with database access. This is not a book for 'enterprise' developers, so don't expect to see any COM or ActiveX, but do expect to finish the book feeling satisifed that you know how to put together a complete desktop application from start to finish.
