1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Title ?, 30 Jan 2005
By A Customer
I bought this bought on the assumtion that an Oracle Press book named 'Oracle Database 10g PL/SQL' would be be full of useful information about 10g and PL/SQL.

How wrong I was.

After 7 chapters covering the (very) basic principles of SQL, how to use SQLPlus and something about indexes and constraints, the book finally asks the question "What is PL/SQL" on page 282. After only two chapters and 80 pages the book the book ends on
page 362.

In only 80 pages it is impossible to cover the breadth of pl/sql and there's very little discussion of the new features in 10g.

I'm afraid this the rating for this book can only be 'must do better'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Oracle beginners, 6 Jul 2008
By Mr. I. A. Milne - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I feel the need to review this book as it has helped me so much and the other reviewers comments make no sense to me.

The term "101" in the title refers to the fact that this is an introductory text and not in fact a definitive guide to PL/SQL. If you want intense detail I would suggest another book (the complete SQL reference from Oracle Press is not bad though there are likely to be many better options for PL/SQL).

PL/SQL 101 does a superb job of taking a person from no knowledge to a good understanding of what PL/SQL is, what it can be used for and how to write some basic procedures and functions. I started a job at a company which relied on an Oracle Database and the grounding this book gave me has led me to becoming a pseudo-expert on all things Oracle in the last 2 years. This included writing a procedure within my first 3 months which had a significant impact on the company and got me personally noticed as an "SQL guru" of sorts. I had an amateur enthusiast background in programming and a very rudimentary knowledge of databases and SQL when I first read it so I would suggest that if you fit this description this book is for you, even if you are new to it all I think it will be of assistance.

If you know all about procedures, functions, triggers, exception handling, PL/SQL datatypes and structures then there will be nothing new in this book for you. I suggest you look for another title, though I would definitely recommend something else from Oracle Press as I have 5 of their titles and each one has proved invaluable.
