5.0 out of 5 stars A must have desktop companion for all Dreamweaver MX users., 24 Sep 2002
This book is ideal for people new to web development and/or Dreamweaver MX and seasoned web developers alike. For those interested in building dynamic, database driven aplications, it gives a good overview of all the major server side languages that Dreamweaver MX support, with ASP, JSP and ColdFusion covered in more detail than PHP and ASP.net.

It covers all the major parts and features of Dreamweaver MX, inculding at some length, extension writing and server behavior building. It also has chapters on integrating Flash, server side Flash and Fireworks with Dreamweaver MX. It also shows 'best practices' for web design, development and implementation, which will be especially useful for newcomers to Dreamweaver and web development.

It has very good chapters on database design and development too, which is easily enough to get you on the right tracks with databases from an early stage, without having to resort to a different, database specific book - something most other books have often ignored. This ensures your dynamic web applications will not fail because of a badly built and implemented database - a vital part of dynamic application building.

It also covers the various options for building an ecommerce enabled web site with Dreamweaver MX and third party extensions, including a demo application. There is also a demo of a database driven site. The application samples and databases are available for download online, where the previous book (Dreamweaver Ultradev 4 The Complete Reference) had these on a CD that came with the book, this is no hardship as most developers will have net access.

I have the previous Ultradev 4 based book, and whilst a lot of the demo's are the same, the book covers the new features of Dreamweaver MX so comprehensively, I'd still recommend it even if you have the previous book.

The book can serve both as a tutorial to be worked through, chapter by chapter, or as a handy reference for a particular problem.

In my opinion, a must have desktop companion for all Dreamweaver MX users - it really is The Complete Reference.
