Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Dreamweaver UltraDev 4: The Complete Reference is a detailed and comprehensive book showing how to build dynamic Web sites using Macromedia's leading design tool. This is not a general Dreamweaver tutorial, although there is brief coverage of the basics, but dedicated to Ultradev's server-side scripting and database features. A strong feature is the coverage given to related but vital topics, such as database design and SQL (Structured Query Language). There are plenty of examples, and the most advanced chapters cover building Dreamweaver extensions and creating an e-commerce site.

UltraDev won't do anything for you unless it is correctly configured, and this is covered in detail in the first part of the book. The second tackles server-side scripting, and there is a chapter covering each of the three primary technologies supported by UltraDev: Active Server Pages, JavaServer Pages and ColdFusion. Part three is about database management and design, while part four gets into the nitty-gritty of creating pages for searching and displaying data. The last section covers extending UltraDev, including a detailed chapter on building your own Server Behaviours, to integrate custom functionality into the UltraDev environment. There is also a chapter on the UltraDev Shopping Cart, a free add-on that offers e-commerce features.

There are many aspects to Web development, and this title does a good job of covering all the angles of a successful UltraDev project. The accompanying CD includes all the examples including several complete Web sites. --Tim Anderson

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, 3 Mar 2001
By A Customer
I recently got my copy of the book and have had a good look through. It is very worthy of a 5-star rating. I know for a fact that the authors and technical editors are very knowledgeable about Ultradev and its related technologies. This is definitely evident throughout the whole book.

The book will appeal to users of all levels. As well as covering the basics, there is a great section on extending Ultradev. The real power behind the product lies in its extensibility. I personally would consider myself an advanced ASP/Ultradev user and found this section particularly enlightening. Also of interest to me was the Cold Fusion section. Since Macromedia have now merged with Allaire, I suspect there will be even closer integration between Ultradev and Cold Fusion in the future.

The additional support for the book is first class and there is a site dedicated to it. The site contains a plethora of extensions and articles to further whet the appetite. The authors/editors are very active on the various Ultradev newsgroups. They are always willing to answer any questions that readers may have.

The bottom line is that this Ultradev book is the best there is and written by guys who know the product inside out. If you're using Ultradev to build database-driven websites then this book is a must - great value for money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but confusing, 17 April 2001
By A Customer
Buy something else!!! Ultradev is easy to set up and use but this book makes it look like a nightmare. Too much information laid out in a totally obtuse way - the writers seem to be writing for propellor heads and not the people this programme is aimed at. The Macromedia manual is easier to use than this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to have to hand Saved its cost in first 24 hours, 9 April 2001
This book props my office door open at home!

Yes its thick (passes any weight test you care to name) its full of good stuff and I got fed up of getting it off the shelf all the time now I always know where it is.

I have been a user of Ultradev since its start and Drumbeat before it. Whether beginner or more advanced - there is always something to dip into this book for and boy when your banging your head against the wall cos' it just don't damn well work the way you think it should there is no better help to have to hand.

I have had this book for more than two months before I wrote this review anything less and you can't have really done anything other than skimmed the surface.

So go on give your postman a hernia order this book and save yourself time and money!
